Do you think it won't be long until the church puts a moratorium on their world-wide missionary program?

If normal membership requires people to believe in irrational fears (Stan will seduce you, angels are silently note-taking on your behaviour, the bishop can discern your thoughts and lies) then won't members freak out over the spread of the coronavirus?

At some point, the church's legal and PR team are going to tell the leaders that it's not wise to continue sending young men and women to preach the gospel.

I wondered about curtailing the sending out of missionaries, but personally believe ChurchCo will continue to do so—not for the potential converts—but for the membership buy-in. And for so long their hype was that the TRUE CHURCH would be a missionary church.

It's parents who need to put the kibosh on the world-wide missionary program. Until then, their kids are nothing but a commodity to TsCC.

Exactly.

Right. But won't happen because sending the kid on a mission even in the face of danger is how a TBM parent shows they trust the Lord more than anyone else and have the greatest faith of all. And that is what is more important than their children.

They cannot stop the missionary program entirely without risking some serious foolishness. The emperor needs to appear to have new clothes.

It may go online only which is what they have been moving towards, if anything to hide the lack of global interest in a 19th century rural religious product.

But they cannot stop it without Jesus coming. They have painted themselves in a corner again with missionary work will stop as a sign of the Second Coming (Gospel Principles). If Jesus doesn't appear for the next 100 years, like he did when prior mormon prophecies were issued it will be really hard to get out of. The internet is recording everything. The BS revelation will now be audited.

It depends how long this corona virus is around. They have a plausible excuse to curtail missionary work. Already they’ve made it difficult to even pass a worthiness interview. They could have kept raising the bar, but then the virus came along.

When the virus threat lifts, they can conveniently leave the restrictions in place.

However, that would impact the Mormon Reproductive Program. Young women are programmed to hold out for a RM. Without eligible inseminators, where will church growth come from? The Mormon women as a group learned this lesson well: keep a guy horny and he will do anything for you. What a racket. No wonder they hate porn.

Ending the missionary program would be seen/spun as a fulfillment of prophecy and cause paroxysms of excitement throughout all the land of Mormonia.

Brigham Young, JoD 8:123 (July 15, 1860)

"All we have yet heard and all we have experienced is scarcely a preface to the sermon that is going to be preached. When the testimony of the Elders ceases to be given, and the Lord says to them, 'Come home; I will now preach my own sermons to the nations of the earth,' all you now know can scarcely be called a preface to the sermon that will be preached with fire and sword, tempests, earthquakes, hail, rain, thunders and lightnings, and fearful destruction. What matters the destruction of a few railway cars? You will hear of magnificent cities, now idolized by the people, sinking in the earth, entombing the inhabitants. The sea will heave itself beyond its bounds, engulfing mighty cities. Famine will spread over the nations, and nation will rise up against nation, kingdom against kingdom, and states against states, in our own country and in foreign lands; and they will destroy each other, caring not for the blood and lives of their neighbors, of their families, or for their own lives."

Seems like LDS prophets do all the talking while God does none of the actions (see Ponzi Prophets: an Illustrated Guide to the Last 160 years)

My extreme TBM aunt's granddaughter (who is very TBM herself) decided not to go on a mission and she has been ostracized by the males and females as it is now of utmost importance that the males and females go. The pressure is so extreme and ridiculous.

I think the pressure has increased over the years, not decreased, and I think it will continue.
