'Ciao, Moroni' is probably the basis for this action.

Those who have predicted the change of focus seem to be spot on. It's going to became a Holyland church, versus a church of the Americas and the second, fabulously fake, second witness of Jesus. So goodbye to those lovable off-brand Jesusites, the Nephites and Lamanites.

Christ ISN'T the 'central place' in ChurchCo; anyone who says it is ... I'd like to have a chat with them!!!

eta: I'll TODAY pen a ltr to Nelson outlining what happened to me in Morland & invite him to engage in healing my family;

Honesty & Kindness, Mr. Nelson?

And finally, how would an artist add a surfboard to the logo, cuz it definitely needs it!

Why is Jesus wearing a toga? I read that people during Jesus' time wore tunics or robes with belts. Does LDS Inc. do any research?

This will surely be corrected soon, but as of this moment the 1st bullet point says:

"President Russel M. Nelson spoke at the end of Saturday’s evening session, where he introduced a new symbol for the church."

I'm not kidding. The Deseret News MISSPELLED "Russell." The official church propaganda sheet can't even get its own prophet's name right.

I already took a screenshot (too bad, church). Get yours quickly before it's fixed.

The logo looks like a cemetery monument! But, this is another indicator of how LDS, Inc is trying to seem more mainstream as a denomination. Unfortunately, for Mormons, this re-branding isn’t going to make all the well-known fringe practices and views of the church seem mainstream, there’s too much easily accessible information available. In a sense, the logo is “preaching to the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square” in the 1950s.

It is a cemetery monument Forest Lawns, LA.

Exactly! It IS a cemetery piece! Stephen L. Richards, the then owner of Wasatch Lawn Cemetery in SLC, and the owner of Forest Lawn Cemetery, LA, (can't remember his name) were both on the National Cemetery Association board together, and were good friends. Together, they commissioned two marble copies of the "Christus" statues, only in "heroic" proportions. Richard's Christus is in the SLC visitor's center, and the other is at Forest Lawn. Richards felt that with all the statues honoring Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and whoever, that Christ should be incleded somewhere. I'm sure he and David O. McKay had no intention of "the Christus" becoming a household icon, like the Catholic St. Christopher medals and Virgin Marys, but it has happened.

Thorvaldsen must be turning over in his grave. His central masterpiece is a plastic and plaster symbol for an American cult. I wonder how his family feel about this. I'll bet they didn't receive any royalties from those Mormon cheapskates.

It's a double isult--to Christ, and to a great work of art.

Yeah, it's not really "Him", anyway.

I vote it looks like something in a cemetery too with a side order of Toga Party.

But for me the big take away was Good Friday? Since when was that a thing for mormons? Granted, it has been decades for me but is this some new thing? I remember it being something not done because it worships a dead Christ like wearing a crucifix.

Wonderful! Marvelous!!!

I hope Mr. President Nelson puts that into full effect, top to bottom, side to side, beginning to end!!

My suggested beginning place: Honesty & Kindness, ELSE this effort will shortly be counted as a tragic Mistake-Error if not a Red Herring..

Truth or Dare, Mr. President Nelson, Substance 'on the ground' or more smoke & mirrors, it's Your Choice...

I wonder if Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen, where this statue is located, will see an uptick in visitors now!

Actually, on a serious note, how is it possible the the Mormon church can appropriate a symbol that is identified with, and actually located in, another church? Does this mean the Church of Denmark is now the "true" church?

Presumably the statue is in the public domain (original was made in 1821) and the Danish church's symbol is just the standard cross

When she first went back, she kept asking me if I had seen the Christus statue at temple square. I said, "Of course. My mother took us to temple square a lot on Sundays when she was arguing with my dad about going to church." I saw that thing so many times. We tried to find things to do at TS while my mom was wandering around, but there was nothing.

I got my daughter one of the $5 ones from Seagull Books, the size they are giving to the YM and YW for doing their goals.

This makes everything better. She doesn't have to worry about sitting in a hotel room in Fairbanks and not knowing if she is going to be furloughed this season and how is she going to get home.

Yes, Mormons boast about not using crosses (an evil symbol used by evil Catholics...), but now they are using graven images, statues etc quite often.

Most protestant/evangelical Christians in Brazil take seriously the graven image ban. No pictures/statues of Jesus anywhere to be seen. It is considered idolatry.

So one more reason for them to look down on Mormons. :)

(Not that they are any better than Mormons. But they have become quite strong in the country.)

Well, the original was created for and stands in a Catholic church.

Apparently Nelson doesn't know this and mistakenly made a Catholic statue the new symbol of Mormondom--or he does and this is another of his attempts to mainstream the Morg.

It’s actually a Christ statue that’s in a Lutheran church. So get rid of Mormon and Moroni and start using Protestant symbols and terms like ministering.

Does Dusty Rusty realize the Christus in the church logo comes from a Lutheran church in Denmark?

Options: ReplyQuote

From Wikipedia:

-In the 1950s, Stephen L Richards, a church apostle, purchased a 3.4-metre (11-foot) replica of the Christus and presented it to church president David O. McKay.
-In 1966, the statue was placed at the church's Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah.
-The church's second Christus replica was created to be displayed in its pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. The display of the replica "was intended to help visitors understand that Latter-day Saints are Christians".
-Since the display of the Christus at the World's Fair and at Temple Square, the church has created replicas of the statue and displayed them in visitors' centers near its temples in Hamilton, New Zealand; Laie, Hawaii; Los Angeles, California; Mesa, Arizona; Mexico City; Nauvoo, Illinois; Oakland, California; Palmyra, New York; London, England; Portland, Oregon; Rome, Italy; St. George, Utah; Washington, D.C.; Paris, France; São Paulo, Brazil; and Provo, Utah.
-Replicas are also on display at the church's visitors' centers at the Hill Cumorah and in Independence, Missouri.
-The church uses the image of the Christus on its webpages and in other official publications
