I think the hanky shout is one of the most hideous things I've seen in mormonism and for an outsider looking in, it shows how ridiculous mormon rituals are.

I like where they are. Thank you Colleen. I'm glad you posted. Like you said this is ridiculous and Hinckley did it. I had forgotten that he had. Blocked it I think.

Mormon Constantly need to reinforce - verify - validate their club membership; while most in your ward know whether or not you have a membership card (aka temple recommend), the Hankie Wave & Hosanna Shout are a touch more visible, public tokens of belonging, no matter how absurd.

It's about living & being seen in the Bubble of Mo Certainty.
