"Hundreds of people visited the C&C Coffee and Kitchen on Sunday, with some praising its defiance in allowing people to eat breakfast burritos and drink coffee at tables despite broad restrictions that limit Colorado restaurants to carryout service. Images from Sunday morning show the restaurant had a line of people at the door, with a crowd inside."

Castle Rock is the county seat of Douglas County, which as of today has had 604 confirmed cases of CV-19 and 29 deaths.

That number may be going up.

My question is
Is there any empirical evidence that dining in this restaraunt has anything to do with the spread of the diseasse?

We had ordered a take out from our favorite restaurant here in Tennessee on Sunday. We ordered take out in the past from there. When I pulled into the parking lot, it was full. The outdoor dining was packed shoulder to shoulder. The inside for dining and for takeout was also packed. I grabbed our order and ran out. I was the only person wearing mask. No staff member was wearing one.. We will not go there again. I am afraid the virus is going to spread rapidly here.

Eric, I've been avoiding takeout so far, but I would not patronize any restaurant where the workers are not wearing masks and gloves.

I also remember from my days cooking in a restaurant that restaurants often do not offer their cooks sick days. Guess who works even when violently ill? I was told to keep working once by a manager even when I was pretty sure that I had influenza. Many other cooks on my shift had already called out, my manager was desperate, and I was desperate (to make my rent) to a certain point. But even I felt so sick that I wanted to be home.

I think that one of the smartest things that state legislatures could do to provide for public health would be to require that restaurants offer all workers above say, 15 hours a week five paid sick days per year. I say this because it is not unusual for restaurants to keep cooks' hours just under full time to avoid paying benefits. My former restaurant did this to me.

This is a big slap in the face to every health care worker out there risking their own lives. And the attempt to wrap this "eff U" attitude in the flag is beyond comprehension.

Selfishness at its most blatant is on the rise. These same people will rush to the overcrowded hospitals when they get sick as they risk the lives of those who will attempt to save them.

Otherwise, you'd better pray the cooks are not shedding the virus on your food while preparing it.

That is what we are doing too. So that limits us to two options. Papa Murphy's pizza and a local tiny coffee shop. Both have drive through. Both you order/pay in advance. Both are using gloves and masks. Take the food, use sanitizer. Call when you get home, then someone opens the door/dog gate. Food goes right in the oven till we are ready to cook. Wash hands. Packaging straight to the outside trash, wash hands. We only do it every couple of weeks and yes, I AM TIRED OF COOKING! And planning and limiting our curbside pick up to every 10-14 days. And only getting things that can be quarantined or washed. But it is as safe as we can get so that is what we are doing and will continue to do.

Look at other countries. Our recklessness is causing needless death and it will keep this thing going for a long time.

I'm fortunate to live in California where they're taking this virus seriously, as well as LA County which still requires employees and customers of essential businesses to wear at least a cloth face covering. There are signs everywhere reminding people to wear a face covering before entering, and at stores where they limit the number of people inside, there's an employee making sure everyone they let in is wearing a mask.

I've been getting takeout on the weekends because I want to support local restaurants and everyone is wearing a mask and gloves. They also wipe down menus if you didn't call ahead with an order with a disinfectant solution. They also constantly clean the area they've set up for the pickup of orders, and those that have drive thru lanes put the order in a little basket so you don't have any contact with the employee working that area.

"Breaking a federal quarantine issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is punishable by a year in jail or a fine of up to $100,000, although the CDC has not appeared to use the power outside of an order to quarantine cruise-ship passengers in January. States penalties are less harsh, though more commonly implemented: In Connecticut, those found to have broken an order can be fined up to $1,000, or face imprisonment for up to a year. The most stringent laws are in Maryland and Louisiana, where those who break quarantine are subject to a $3,000 maximum fine and up to two years in jail, respectively."

Maryland has done a great job right along. Our governor is lifting our stay at home order this Friday, after two weeks of flat and declining numbers overall. Businesses and churches may reopen at 50% capacity. Social distancing and masks are still strongly encouraged (masks are required in my home county when entering stores or using public transportation.) Working from home is still encouraged where possible. Governor Hogan warned that if there is a spike, he and his CV-19 commission will have to reconsider.

Right now the counties surrounding Washington, D.C. (Montgomery and Prince Georges) are hot spots, and I don't think they will be reopening with the rest of the state.

I personally have no desire to go out at present. Apart from groceries and supplies, I have everything that I need. I will wait to see if there is a spike.

Dave, has the CDC issued a quarantine order for COVID-19? If it had, then there wouldn't be so much leeway for states to make decisions. In other words, I think the White House has prevented the CDC from taking that action.

Do you know the answer?

"The Associated Press reports.

The Trump administration shelved a document created by the nation’s top disease investigators with step-by-step advice to local authorities on how and when to reopen restaurants and other public places during the still-raging coronavirus outbreak.

The 17-page report by a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention team, titled “Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework,” was researched and written to help faith leaders, business owners, educators and state and local officials as they begin to reopen.

It was supposed to be published last Friday, but agency scientists were told the guidance “would never see the light of day,” according to a CDC official. The official was not authorized to talk to reporters and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity."

Yes.

And if there are no published standards, there is nothing that can be enforced. The CDC has, by administration dictate, been sidelined.

It's always a question of whether some agency or person is willing to stand up for its/her legal authority. Sometimes it happens, usually not.

I just wanted to nail down whether the the CDC had exercised its legal prerogatives and duty. I now have my answer. There is no national standard, no national enforcement. Wisconsin's supreme court is free to reject measures necessary for the nation's wellbeing, regrettable as that may be.

Food buying was never my favorite outing but now...with all the distancing and masks and old ladies giving me the stink eye if I get within 10 feet of them...FUCK IT. So I don't have much food here...and that's OK...I could stand to skip a few meals. Kinda getting used to this hermit life.

"The Department of Health and Human Services concludes its “Crimson Contagion” simulation in August. The exercise simulated a U.S. response to a fictitious respiratory virus that began in China and quickly spread around the world. The result of the exercise, contained in an internal draft report in October 2019 and marked “Draft Do Not Distribute,” includes a section titled “resources.” The section foregrounds the lack of PPE preparedness in the event of a global pandemic and problems in the supply chain for medical equipment including ventilators and other ancillary medical supplies."

I think that individual preferences on whether or not the economy should re-open is dependent on how the current circumstances affect each individual.

Those who were at home most of the time collecting social security checks and having nowhere to go before the pandemic, are most likely to say "those people who want to go back to work just don't care about others". Those who were working from home to begin with are probably doing the same.

Those who have completely lost all of their income or who'se businesses were successful but are now failing are saying "let's get back to work right now". I think there needs to be more empathy for these people.

If the government were to cut off all social security payments until everyone else returned to work (fair is fair), I think we would see quite a different response. Seventy and eighty year old people would be banning together in agreement that the economy should be re-opened immediately, despite the risks. They might even all get together and eat out at a restaurant (pre-pandemic style), in protest. I am not saying that social security should be cut now. It shouldn't. But everyone's job or business is 'Essential' to them, as in maintaining their very survival.

How many people here on this board (please speak up) can say something like "I am losing everything and am struggling just to survive and eat. I get unemployment which doesn't even pay my utilities. But we should still keep the economy closed now"? If you are wealthy and could use a break and some stay-at-home-time anyway, this question isn't for you. If your 401K has lost a lot of value and you want to use that to show your suffering, you miss the point. Many people (a significant percentage of the population) in our society live hand to mouth.

Every paycheck that I get now, I feel extremely fortunate to be able to work from home and to know that I have some reserve if the paychecks do stop. But I don't for a minute resent those who need to return to working right away and who say so. Is there anyone here on this board who is in a whole new world of hurt right now and maybe even frightened for their own survival (or potential lack thereof), who maintains that this shutdown of the economy and how our society is handling it, is going in the right direction?..... crickets...
