I meant to say Mormonism desexualizes Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith.

The spiritual excitement takes the place of the carnal, natural, and nasty side of hero worship.

Try bringing in Black Jesus painting and hang it without telling anyone. See how long it lasts.

That's not Jesus. It was from some guy's skull they dug up.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image,

OR ANY LIKENESS of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

There are churches that actually take the Ten Commandments seriously.

It is not the case of LD$ Corp.

About half of the Ten Commandments are absurd and richly deserve to be ignored. This one is at the top of the "please ignore" heap.

And ironically it is the one where God's wrath was invoked and he was specifically writing his will down for humans to get it right. Golden calf up his ass.

I am not saying that the world needs to embrace the Ten Commandments as universal truth, from from it.

My point is that LD$ Inc claims to be the only and one true church on God's green Earth -- the one that is in direct contact with heaven and that follows "truth" to the letter.

However, the reality is that they blatantly ignore the very basics. (Something as basic as the Ten Commandments...)

(The shining pen of profit Nelson overrides/overwrites anything.)

I always get the old and new mixed up. Is it old Jewish and New Jesus? Is it some kind of weird, ok idols are okay now that Jesus came and was God?

Seriously, thinking about it makes it seem such a mess. Like hundreds upon hundreds of years of mixing and mashing and changing and then modern times speeds this up and more thrashing about the "truth." God is a fickle and everchanging god.

It IS confusing...

After all, Mormons teach that YHVH, the God of the Old Testament, is actually Jesus, the Son... (Elohim being the Father, a separate being of flesh and bones who is only vaguely supervising the work of Elohim Junior, YHVH.)

So Jesus at one point said that representations of Him are a no-no (even proclaiming it as one of the Ten Commandments, an "eternal" law). But suddenly He changes His mind and tells His "prophets" to place statues and pictures of Him all over the place, including places of worship.

Maybe Elohim is not supervising close enough Elohim Junior, who is still learning the trade.

LOL! God in training.

A long while ago I read an article which was a survey of Christ imaging found on church web pages. Guess who won? The Mormons.

My FIL's take on Mormonism is it is an ever developing, improving, and evolving thing. So much for God getting it right to begin with. But that is His creation's fault.

They make sure the lawn is neat & trim also

(what about buildings in arid places like AZ & SoCal? do they insist on planting water-thirsty grass?)

Image is a close 2nd Runner=up to Tithing as #1 priority in Morland / ChurchCo

"desexualizes Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith." I would say the opposite. The art seeks to put forth a handsome sun tanned hero, beefy, he could pass for a cowboy. Sort of a Mel Gibson kind of guy. If you study the official art of Joe and Jebus, (Del Parsons) it's basically the same guy, the same facial ratios, the only difference is a few more whiskers on one.

But "photoshopping" desirable features unto historical characters happens outside of a sexual context. Jesus was made to look like he was starving and suffering in The Middle Ages. This was appealing to people back them. Today he is made to look like The Marlboro Man with long hair and a robe. It isn't sexualizing but giving him a facelift, one that Joseph Smith got as well.

I don't understand how this sexualizes them?

I warned every Mormon I knew that perfection is sterile. Ozymandias had the perfect monument to his greatness.

That is an inspired allusion, exactly right.

I would point out that nowhere in history, to my best knowledge, was there ever an actual drawing created live of the man Jesus!!

I like to say that Santa provides material comfort for children, while Jesus comforts their racist parents.

Not quite. They can't do as they please regardless of their billions. And a statement like yours is very off-putting to me a former Mormon. What are you trying to say?

One of the reasons I see that this opinion would be offensive to exmos who post on this recovery board is that they post on this recovery board because they had negative experiences with Mormonism and many were deeply hurt by it. This is a place to share their experiences and express their challenges, queries and pain.

Remarks like the one above suggest support of the LDS Church, whether intended or not. Many exmos are bone weary of that particular fight. They especially don't expect to have to engage in it in this space.

Also, comments that come across as "defending the faith" (Mormonism and Christianity) are not allowed by the Admin of this board. That is a big clue as to the intended nature of the Recovery from Mormonism board.

>It is there church So they are their rules.

If this attitude applied RfM should just be shut down.

Rather, there is healing in being able to call out and discuss the thing that hurt you. It's a given that "it's their church/their rules" but that doesn't mean Mormonism should be above criticism or censure. Especially by former or even current members. Too many had to stifle themselves while in the church. It's time to talk. Talking is good. Including topics about their church, their rules. Especially about their church, their rules. The church and the rules that hurt people.

I have no problem with Christ centered art!

I have a problem with their interpretation of what is and what isn't

I'd say that letting the Mormon Church tell you what is art is like them telling you what is porn. It goes both ways. An aesthetic libido on the one hand and an erotic libido on the other hand.

Did the church consider the Buddy Christ statue before it went with the Fabio look?
