https://news.yahoo.com/evangelicals-fear-the-mark-of-the-beast-from-a-coronavirus-vaccine-183249943.html

Natural Selection does have a way of striking a balance.
Take Sweden, which has about the same per capita death rate as the US, but not as bad as NYC or a lot of other Western European countries, even though they didn't lock down their economy.

Time will tell, but they're going for the whole herd immunity thing, meaning a critical mass of about 70% of the population will have to contract the virus to build up antibodies.
If the we have a population of 333 million in the US, and 70% get infected that is about 233 million, our death rate per infections is around 6%. That could mean 14 million dead.

Eventually we're all going to have to achieve herd immunity question is, how do we avoid 14 million dead in the process?

The fired head of infectious diseases said we're in for the darkest winter in recent history if we don't act now to get harvested antibodies into at risk populations.

No vaccine is ever given in the hand or forehead.

Why aren't Mormons paranoid about all their temple signs in the right hand being the mark of the beast? Of course not--that's different.

The evangelicals themselves are America's biggest threat. Racist, anti-intellectuals.

Plus they NEVER hire Mariachi Bands to play at their weddings!

What's up with that?

We had an all female mariachi band at our reception. It was the only mariachi group available in south Florida on our wedding date, but they turned out to be great. Viva las chicas!

Or my dixieland band for that matter!

I attended a wedding in the French Quarter featuring a Dixieland band. Conventional weddings have always bored me since.

If you remember the band name I'll pass that on for you! I probably work with them.

Down here, we have a law firm named Simmons and Fletcher. "Christian Trial Lawyers" is their tag line....

And there is a car rep[air shop called Christian Brothers. And their last name isn't Christian........

There are a couple of those christian brothers repair shops in my Colorado city. I refuse to patronize them.

6% is way too high. It may be that high or even slightly higher in very vulnerable populations (e.g. elder care facilities), but it appears like the upper bound on overall mortality in the general population is 1%. It's hard to nail down because it is hard to nail down exactly how many cases there are that we don't know about, and how many deaths are misreported, or have multiple causes of death.

Even 1% is quite bad enough,

Viewed in terms of the worst case for humanity, COVID is close to ideal. A disease that kills quickly, like Ebola, destroys its hosts and burns out before spreading widely. An illness that has a lower fatality rate and is highly communicable is much more likely to become a pandemic.

In COVID we have an illness that kills a lot, many times more than the flu; is highly contagious; and relies on asymptomatic carriers to facilitate its communication. Not only is this a recipe for a wide expansion that kills hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of people one or more times, it is also the sort of public health crisis that does deep economic damage whether or not countries "lock down."

It can kill you more than once? It's even more virulent than I thought!

(Apologies for a nurse's dark humour. But I couldn't resist).

Yes 6% is way too high. Australia is almost at the end of the first wave, with minimal new infections and not many left in hospital.

We have had 7,000 confirmed cases and 98 deaths, so only about 1.5% fatality rate. Of course the true number of total cases is probably higher, so the overall death rate is lower than 1.5%.

Assuming there IS a vaccine at some point, there may be a bit of a shortage initially. If the evangelicals don't want it, perhaps the system will not have to prioritize who gets it.

Eventually it will become a problem, though. Just as the anti-vaxers are currently and/or potentially posing problems with polio, measles, and other diseases, when too many idiots refuse to be vaccinated or have their offspring vaccinated, then herd immunity can't happen, and those who should not be vaccinated for legitimate reasons are not protected by the herd.

I personally believe they have every right not to be vaccinated, but that public schools as well as private schools not run by idiots have a right to exclude the children of anti-vaxers, as does Disneyland or any other tourist trap. Give 'em the mark of the beast (maybe a scarlet "A" on their foreheads) for refusing vaccination so we'll all know who they are and avoid them.

that's a good idea! Then they truly will have a mark to be upset about - though the opposite of the one they think they are getting.

What about the Mormon organ being the mark of the beast? The Mormon pipe organ sounds like Halloween, the Munsters, and the Addams Family music. This coronavirus also sounds like Azazel. There is also a movie about Azazel called Fallen and it's creepy.
