My favorite movies (in no particular order) all revolve around frivolity/silliness/laughter and just generally not being religious or giving ANY credit to ghawd:
"My Favorite Year" "Young Frankenstein" (that's pronounced 'FRANK en steen') "Let It Ride" "What's Up, Doc?" "MASH" (the book was WAY better/sillier!)
"Mormon missionary Joe Young is approached to be the title character and lead of a pornographic superhero film, Orgazmo. Joe is conflicted because of his beliefs, but the salary offered would pay for a wedding in the temple in Utah where his fiancée Lisa has expressed a strong desire to wed."
A TBM friend from high school who used to drag me to movies like Saturday Night Fever and The Rocky Horror Picture Show back in the 70's, was appalled that I liked Bridget Jones Diary. I thought it was a really tame movie. She was offended by the sex scenes, most likely because I am now exmo and she needs to put on a big show of being offended.
TBMs just like to be triggered and offended by everything so they can appear more righteous.

A lot of Christians love the Life of Brian. Certainly my mother did.
However, I suspect it is probably seen as transphobic now due to the scenes about Loretta who identifies as a woman.
==I'm a nevermo and I don't get it. Some of the best movies have violence in it. For example, Robocop. If you are going to cut out violence, sex and making fun of religion, there won't be too many movies left.
I did enjoy Religoulous. That was more of a documentary.
One time the VT came over when my mom was watching The World According to Garp. My older sibling had cranked up the volume because the sisters began their usual mormon spiel about callings, GC talks and ward gossip. It was the way to make the VT feel uncomfortable and it worked!
The extremely liberal themes of the movie really jilted them. One of the sisters finally spoke up in a highly alarmed manner, "Sister Goop, do you feel comfortable having your youngest being exposed to such abominations?"
-Oh, Messy is in the dining room. He really doesn't pay attention to movies playing in the living room.
So I guess that I'm confused that many mormons like it so much because everything they abhor (like cussing, drugs, nudity and sex) is prominently featured.
Ari Aster's films. I saw Hereditary(very happy family gets infiltrated by a satanic cult) and loved it. Midsommar too has a sort of Wicker Man take on brutal and archaic cultures and traditions mixed with an empathic community.
Lemme see - Riders of the Purple Sage, Basic Instinct, Salò or the 120 Days of Sodom, Lolita, Cannibal Holocaust, the Cider House Rules, the Human Centipede (part 1, 2 & 3) Fight Club (conformists hate this film), Boogie Nights, Mulan, Ready Player One, Psycho, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Serbian Film, Idiocracy, the Simpsons Movie, I Spit on Your Grave, Amazon Women on the Moon, Communion, Glen or Glenda, Bladerunner 2049 and This is Spinal Tap.
Anything by the following directors - Russ Meyer, David Lynch,
Nice list! I'd throw Caligula (x rated cut) in there, and Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain. Also: In the Realm of the Senses. A Snake of June. Tetsuo's Iron Man. Ichi the Killer.... I could go on and on.
National Lampoon, Van Wilder. Both movies are very explicit and show a young stud indulging in all his passions yet coming out fine. It's just bad ass!
The Netflix movie ‘The First Temptation of Christ’ is funny. Low budget and rubbish acting but it’s so bad it’s good.
It has Christ as a 30 year old gay man who doesn’t know he’s the son of god. The movie starts at his 30th birthday party, when he brings his boyfriend home with him from his 40 days away in the desert. After which, his parents tell him who his real father is.
"A Man for All Seasons" - about Sir Thomas More, who was executed by King Henry VIII because he would not recognize the validity of Henry's divorce from Queen Catherine and subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn.
I saw The Exorcist at a Salt Lake Theater when it first came out. It was a memorable night. There were picketers outside, and inside, waiting for the show to start, The was much jostling and fussing for seats, arguments broke out. A bucket of popcorn and Pepsi’s were thrown at patrons, multiple shouting arguments ensued. People were escorted out. Much muttering and intonation during the movie. Several got up and walked out during the showing. Gasps and harrumphs were rampant.
It was the best experience! A good scary movie in a surreal environment can’t be beat.
