In reading about mission presidents and all the wacky stuff they did it occured to me....are mission presidents ever sustained?

You sustain the profit, apostles, stake presidents and bishops.

Any insight? Are they the only presiding entity in mormondom not sustained?

If you sustain the Gasbags, then that's good enough.

They are called by the top dogs.

The sustaining ritual just creates the illusion of free agency. If you oppose, you won't be welcome and you will be disciplined. Back when Saddam Hussain was running Iraq, I saw a cartoon in the paper of an Iraqi voting booth. There were two levers inside. One was labeled "Saddam". The other was labeled "Not Saddam". The "Not Saddam" lever was connected by a string to the trigger of a gun that was pointed at the voter. So when that lever was pulled, the voter would be shot. I think of that Iraqi voting booth every time I see the sustaining ritual at General Conference.
