"The discovery of a rare chemical in the clouds of Venus could be a sign of life, an international team of astronomers said in a study published Monday.

The researchers say they haven’t directly detected life on Venus, but they have observed the chemical phosphine in the atmosphere, which they say can be explained only by the presence of living microbes. On Earth, bacteria produce phosphine.

“Any organisms on Venus will probably be very different to their Earth cousins, but they too could be the source of phosphine in the atmosphere,” the researchers said in a news release."

Yawn! This is almost as good as the Martian methane. There are seasonal variations in methane levels in the Martian atmosphere. Some call this evidence of Martian microbial life (and I think it probably is), but many scientists refuse to stomach that explanation and deny it absolutely. Any non-biological geological process is better for them than a farting microbe.

The idea of microbes in the Venusian atmosphere is nothing new at all. Decades ago, it was suggested the dark streaks in Venus' atmosphere resulted from microbial activity. One of the Venera probes also detected some strange molecules when it deployed a balloon, and that was decades ago.

Watch now as scientists scramble to produce new models of how this Venus gas is the result of non-biological activity.

We used to wonder if other stars had planets, or if planets were a rare feature. We are now finding out that planets are as common as, um, dirt.

I am of course guessing, but I suspect we will find out the same thing about life. Any planet that has any part of it that is hospitable to life will likely have life. That means the upper reaches of Venus' atmosphere, underground on Mars, perhaps somewhere in the atmospheres of Jupiter, Neptune and Saturn, and on various moons of Jupiter and Saturn, some sort of life is possible.

Intelligent life is another thing altogether. Insert joke here about little evidence there is intelligent life in earth.
