Alone at last
All my bridges burned
And all my allies turned
And none to mourn
Any longer for me.

Chased away,
They leave me alone.
Which is as is should be.

I long to sink into shadow
into darkness where
I may observe and
Not be observed
And be full of words
And say but little.

I liked it there.

Only not my thoughts.
The God that dwelled there
Made them my enemies,
But I have conquered Him
And won them back.

I have my thoughts
On my own side
For the first time
And, having that,
need little else.

Thinking of your thoughts but not of you. The peace that silence brings is full of yourself.

Your post reminds me very much of the Youngbloods' "Darkness Darkness," the B-side of their 1969 hit, "Get Together." The lyrics are as follows:

"Darkness darkness, be my pillow
Take my head and let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow
In the silence of your deep.

Darkness darkness, hide my yearning
For the things that cannot be.
Keep my mind from constant turning
Towards the things I cannot see.

Darkness darkness, long and lonesome
Is the day that brings me here.
I have felt the edge of sadness.
I have felt the depth of fear.

Darkness darkness, be my blanket.
Cover me with the endless night.
Take away, take away the pain of knowing.
Fill the emptiness with bright."
