Sleep is a poor substitute for coffee, haha--as the joke goes.

Olive oil slathered on the head rather than on a salad and laying on of hands is no substitute either.

But coffee is no joke according to the NYT Science Section yesterday.

Doctors studied almost 1800 patients with metastatic color or rectal cancer who could not be treated with surgery.

The study included coffee consumption.*

Those who drank a cup a day had an 11% increased rate of survival and a 5% increased rate of living progression free.

For those who drank four cups a day, those rates increased to 36% and 22%.

Whether the coffee was regular or decaf made little difference.
The article cautions that coffee is not a cure or treatment for cancer.

A Votre Sante, Kids!

* The study factored in race, smoking, alcohol intake, aspirin use, diabetes and the addition of Milk, nondairy creamers or sweeteners to the coffee.

Remember to consecrate the coffee and not the cup.

That seems impossible since you have to lay your hands on the cup to bless the coffee. Or do you just stick your fingers right in? And do you have to have two people to do it like with a proper consecration.

And how much extra will Starbucks charge for this?

Just don't consecrate the coffee with olive oil.

The best thing for consecration is Kahlua and whipped cream and a shot of tequila if you are in the mood. Best after some green corn enchiladas. Oh how I miss eating at El Coyote on Beverly. Young and poor and eating there for two on $10 when splurging-- and that included the margaritas.

Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end . . .

Long ago, and oh so far away . . . as little Karen would sing.

+Done & Done:

So, why don’t mormon drink coffee? I had heard that the original command was not to drink hot drinks.
Can you drink cold drinks?
Who gave that command? Is it Joseph Smith?
Why is he against hot drinks?
Has the mormon church claimed that it is because of health benefits?

The long answer cuz I don't want to start work yet. Some could spell this out more accurately but this is mine from what I have studied.

Emma was sick of cleaning up the tobacco spit from Joseph's meeting upstairs and in the temple and made a big stink about it. In return Joseph came up with a revelation that Emma's precious coffee and tea could no longer be drunk. This happened to coincide with the big ongoing prohibition movement taking place in the area of no alcohol, tobacco or hot drinks.* Hot drinks were coffee and tea and that was it so no one was specifying as such but everybody knew what that was although some "prophet" (HEBER?" later did. It was presented as advice--thus Word of Wisdom-- until a later prophet made it a commandment cuz he needed to prove God had talked to him and that was a good way to do it.

Back then everybody knew those things were bad for you. Of course coffee and tea aren't, nor the occasional glass of wine or beer, and the world would laugh at the WoW on that account as well now, but Mormons are STUCK with it, cuz, uh, revelation from God.

I guess Heavenly Father could change his mind like he did with Black men and the priesthood, but, then they don't have too many revelations left so have to spread out the re-revelating. Also, how else they gonna test your allegiance?

Besides, someday the world is going to catch on that coffee really is the root of all evil, Really, I swear. You can quote me.

*My mother and many Mormons talk non-stop about how back in the day nobody knew how bad coffee was for you except Joseph as God hisself had told him. Proof right there he was a prophet brother and sisters.
