So I was laying on the couch this morning enjoying some nice slothfulness when it occurred to me that sloths are native to South and Central America. You don’t find them in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East. So how did the authors of the Bible know about them and why would they expect their audience to know what a sloth is?

Sloth, in the Bible, is all about being lazy. Lazy people were spiteful.

So when it came time for Adam to name all the animals, the demeanor of this animal naturally evoked laziness, and that became its name.

Same way I got my given name, Hairy.

It's probably how the translators chose to interpret it. You also find a lot of other related words and phrases such as idleness and sluggard. The writers of the Bible seem very concerned about slothfulness!

On a related note, most people seem to like sloths. They are like giant pandas, almost impossible to hate.
