“We express our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones,” wrote Woodruff in an official Church statement. “We pray they will feel the peace and comfort of our loving Heavenly Father as they deal with this tragedy and honor her life. We also pray for the other missionaries who were with Sister Nielsen at the time of the accident and are working to provide them with the necessary support as they process what happened.”

She fell to her death while hiking in the Swiss Alps.

It just occurred to me:

If ghawd needs them on the other side, how about just letting them die in their sleep?

Because Ghawd is all about the drama... seriously, you already knew this.

Which makes God a sadist, another reason not to worship her.

I don't wish to calloused but If you walk in harms way you may be harmed. It was an acceptable risk to the missionary involved. I feel remorse for her family. but remember those slopes are treacherous. I hope the rest of the group emotionally recovers allright.

Good observation. I counseled a student who talked his friend into going rock climbing with him. Both were experienced but the friend fell to his death. The guy who invited him came close to suicide out of guilt.

Whoever it was that suggested the hike is probably suffering immensely.

No longer being a Mormon, I have no idea where the Alpine German-Speaking Mission might be specifically. I get frustrated when news articles say someone died or flooding occurred or an earthquake devastated a place that could be in a very broad area like an entire country or state. This seems to be the new way of disseminating news. Be as vague and general as possible with details.

If she was serving in the "Alpine" region wouldn't hiking mountains be a part of her regular work/life habit? Does anyone know which city, or at least canton, this tragedy may have occurred near? Were they hiking at dawn, dusk, night? The whole who, when, where, how, and why of good journalism seems to be getting sadly left wanting. And don't get me started on grammar! Casual grammar is one thing but mainstream media needs to step it up a notch.

Some of us probably qualify for the award but out of sheer luck we are still here.

I'm sure they need entertainment there too.

I keep telling God that EOD is needed on the other side but she just won't take him.

"Thou shalt not..."

It does not say, "Harass all the Thees who do."

You'll be okay.

The sister missionaries stopped by for my wife tonight. One of the missionaries had had her grandmother contact her today worried about her after reading about this accident. The other missionaries hadn't heard about this, so one of them looked up the missionary's facebook and read her last post. It ended with her saying she was grateful that when she died she could live with her family forever. The missionaries saw this as prescient.

I chalk it up to coincidence. My missionary kids have ended their email with that sentiment and haven't died.

What was she doing in the Swiss alps? I read that missionaries from the US were not allowed to proselytize in Switzerland starting in 2012. Perhaps her Alpine-German speaking mission included part of the Swiss alps and she was allowed to hike there on p-day.

I hiked in the alps on p-day when I was in the Zurich Switzerland mission. I have a photo of myself sitting on the edge of a cliff.

Her parents must be devastated. From the article, it looks like she only had three months left. She probably would have been home for Christmas. So tragic.

I wonder if “the necessary support” includes a cash settlement.

This is where "The Elect" get tested. If her parents don't demand compensation, they are among The Elect. If they do demand compensation then they are among the fallen.

Everything is a test and in Mormonism, the leadership NEVER fails.

I heard this about a woman who wasn't paying attention while driving on the freeway. She drifted off the road shoulder and plowed into a stationary vehicle. Her minivan folded like an accordion and crushed her to death. That's some phone call from God.

I wonder how exhilarating to make the arrangements to get the body shipped back home. All the costs are passed onto the family. The church only offers "advice" on how to ship a corpse.

The church will pay for brand new book of mormon to be laid to rest with the missionary that died in God's service but in reality the "God" character could give a damn.

How tragic that she couldn't visit more sights in Switzerland during the cult programming vacation and made it out alive with very few baptisms.

It's obvious ghawd is in need of some high caliber Executive Assistants!

EA: Excuse me, ghawd...

ghawd: What is it, baby?

EA: JoJu is telling everyone that the Natives of America are the literal descendants of Father Lehi, through Laman and Lemuel, but in than two centuries human science will have invented genetic research and it will be shown that the Natives are Asian, not House of Israel.

ghawd: Good catch! Okay, I'll let him know...

There are so many other examples of screw-ups like this, the most notable, ghawd's failure to curb the racism of Brigham Young.

It's offensive when people actually voice this odd sentiment. A guy I used to go to church with in Germany was angry when another church friend was run over on his bike by a semi-truck rounding a corner in town. It was awful, and bloody, and messy. But at the LDS funeral, the speaker said that he was "needed on the other side," and that God had "called him home." That's a helluva way for God to do it.
