It was right for him to be sent to Jail. Unfortunately, some so called “frontier justice” took place and he became a martyr rather than what he really was, a criminal. What would have happened if he just went to prison? Where would this person’s movement be today?

Joseph Smith, Jr. was never convicted of any crimes (other than the ones that he was convicted of), and a number of times his arrests for crimes did NOT result in a trial, as he was encouraged to escape so as to not create a martyr.

I don't feel anything with regard to how his life ended. Good riddance....
