When asked about Pres. McKay's earlier conception of small temples, Hinckley reportedly said, "I don't know that we ever taught that."

Mark Hofmann suspected, probably with good reason, that Hinkley and the rest of the main leadership, were willing to lie and pay serious hush money to protect the reputation of the church. Hofmann forged documents that played up existing rumors about early church history, calling into question the BoM and the ascension of Brigham Young.

Hinkley bought the documents and kept them secret. Hofmann himself leaked the existence of the documents, forcing Hinkley to make up bull**** rationales about what the documents mean, and why he kept them secret. He pretty much had to donate the forged JS blessing to his son to be next leader to the Community of Christ.

How anybody continued to believe in the Mormon leadership after that is a testament to the power of denial. There may have been leaders as morally corrupt as Hinkley, but there were none where it was more obvious.

I agree, it takes quite some suspension of the critical faculties to be able to continue to "sustain" them. It makes you wonder what else they're hiding in that big vault under the mountain...

It's worth keeping in mind all the leaders after Hinkley saw that decidedly unprophetic fiasco,many saw it up close and personal, but decided to keep promulgating the lie that the leaders have devine (er, divine :-/ ) guidance, and were honest in their dealings. Neither was true.

Those were my sentiments as well. I think Hinckley took us for granted; he didn't think we would care if he dissembled.

And Mormons ate that up--the "Snide Remarks" column in the BYU paper poked fun in one of its fake Conference reports at Hinckley's constantly being referred to as "media savvy." They were PROUD of his ability to BS.

"I don't know that we teach that" was pure dishonesty, though, a lie if ever there were one. And the denials of polygamy as well.

Once you are no longer tethered to the truth, all deception is simply a matter of degree.
