I watched a Johnny Carson show with George and Richard Pryor as the guests. They hung out a lot in NYC when they were starting out.

That's all... Just wanted to get this in, that two of the best ever used to hang out. Can you imagine what it would have been like to be there?

If The Cat and I ever get together, Imma sell tickets...

I'm pretty sure elderolddog is one of the words that can't be said on public broadcast.

Didn't Electric Light Orchestra do an album that started with something like that? If I recall correctly, it went:

"The music is reversible but EOD is not. Turn back, turn back, turn back."

ELO, EOD: is there something you are trying to tell us?

Kazoo bands abounded in my youth, but they were all mechanical; not one was electric.

I don't really tell people things. I just point at things and verbally gawk.

I am ... The Cat Gawker!

Not a lot of fun but it pays well.

Are you the hulking presence that put Gawker out of business?*

He was the greatest.
The Mark Twain of my generation.
America has a great, long tradition of political satirists, who have served as our greatest social critics. That tradition continues with guys like Jon Stewart, Dave Chapell, Colbert and Maher, pointing out the absurdities of society and politics and especially religious douchebags (bigots).
That’s the great thing about America. In a lot of other countries guys like them would get locked up for good.

It's one of those things Americans like to say: "That’s the great thing about America. In a lot of other countries guys like them would get locked up for good."

This is true concerning many less-developed countries. Not so true about COMPARABLE countries... Feeling better than Haiti, for example, doesn't procure much of a buzz...

John Oliver has a weekly broadcast on HBO, Called, “Last Week Tonight” which is banned in Great Britain, which passed a law against speaking evil of the House of the Lord’s Anointed, for instance.

Do you also have brown eyes, Tom?

You can tell when The Cat is sincere: his language gets 'real, man; telling it like it is...'.

That's how real men prove their points.

I think The Cat uses famous people's quotations as a means for proving up his 'adequacy'; a sort of "look what I can do!"

I very much enjoyed George Carlin, although he never got a dime out of me. Is that germane? I don't know. But he did things (how many, I don't know...) for money. Like so many of us, he had to make a living.

The Carlin quotation The Cat featured is from a book published in 2004, titled "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? In order to publish the book, he had to have pages full of print. In other to have pages full of print, he had to write stuff. Was all of it 100% gold?

I don't think the quotation The Cat is hanging his hat on rates that high.

    “Political correctness is America's
newest form of intolerance, and it is
    especially pernicious because it comes
    disguised as tolerance. It presents
itself as fairness, yet attempts to
    restrict and control people's language
with strict codes and rigid rules. I'm
not sure that's the way to fight dis-
    crimination. I'm not sure silencing
people or forcing them to alter their
speech is the best method for solving
problems that go much deeper than speech.”

America doesn't have Freedom of Speech.

This may be a bit silly (who, me?!?), but there are laws on the books that provide for charges and punishment for yelling "FIRE!!" in a crowded theater.

But technically, you can yell the N-word in a crowded theater. Many of us are just hoping that the urge/need to use that word disappears. Sort of like other words are disappearing. (Looking at you, Washington Football Team! I think ya did a good thing; would George agree or not? We can have opinions, but we can't really know.)

Society seems to be trying to curb the usage of hate speech. Is that a good thing or not? George offered up a not very nuanced quotation. He had to know that American doesn't have 'pure' Free Speech... I agree that you can't really legislate hatred out of existence.

Political correctness covers a lot more than just 'let's avoid using inflammatory words.' Not everyone agrees that Fairness is something to works towards, but enough people do so that steps have been taken in that direction. There's a lot of discussion about some of those attempts, like hiring & admission quotas, etc., etc. Not everyone is happy about how 'fairness' is trying to be enforced.

Nice quotation, great comedian. But I don't think The Cat can use him as a soapbox in this instance.

I'm holding out for Washington Lamanites. Would that be politically correct?

I mean, it's said to be factually true and that should count for something.

Another comedian being censored for being a comedian, in a "COMPARABLE country", Canada.

A Supreme Court case focused on a comedy routine mocking a disabled teenager could help shape the limits of free speech — and humor — in Canada.

I've always wondered what a douchebag us exactly. I know a douche is the French for a shower, but why exactly would it be bad to call someone a shower bag?

Maybe someone could explain?

Umm. You might want to use Google. In the USA, it doesn't refer to showering usually.

What got Bill Maher fired from “Politically Incorrect”
Bill Maher is a lot like George Carlin, but not as intelligent, or funny.
George Carlin on “Politically Incorrect” is just as relevant today as it was 25 yrs ago.

I had no idea Aristotle was a comedian. Wish I could have caught his stand up routine on the steps of the Acropolis.

Quite the opposite. Like Sam Harris, Bill Maher is a philosophical genius.

I don’t think anybody believes Maher is a philosopher or a genius, but Sam Harris qualifies on both accounts in my book.
Name an author who wrote a better response to 9-11 than End Of Faith or Letter To A Christian Nation.
The God Delusion comes pretty close, but not quite.
