Looking back on growing up 'mormonish' in the 50s and 60s, I am left with the impression that there was a lot more of a 'ghawd will provide' attitude going on, so that this type of pre-planning wasn't happening.

But I was a kid then, so what do I know? Which I framed in the present tense, because, what do I know?

Mormons aren't the only ones with large families. I doubt Mormons or Full Quiver evangelical types would want to leave their children in the care of someone who reads Slate. Oh no! Liberals! So maybe they're Catholic. Or just ignorant about contraception.

I think that's my reaction to large families -- what's your plan if both parents die (both in terms of child care but also finances?) You have to have a plan. I think that that Prudence's answer was quite reasonable.
