My all-time favorite one-panel cartoon was in the New Yorker, circa the mid-1970s. At that time I was a subscriber. Now that I've learned to read English, I consider the magazine to be beneath me. Back then I only got it for the cartoons.

So here's the story, from the Deseret Times-Picayune-News:

https://www.deseret.com/entertainment/2021/3/26/22353309/new-yorker-cartoon-caption-contest-latest-winner-from-utah

Those who read the article, or finish reading this post, will learn that the 19-year-old winner is from Orem and is currently (as in right now! meaning he's not in the mission field!!!) attending Rice University.

The article mentions that his mom, a J. Reuben Clark school of law professor, has also won that contest. It doesn't mention that his dad is also an instructor at the law school.

So just how 'mormon' can these people be?

Why would the Deseret Times-Picayune-News fail to mention the father of the winner? He's the one with the priesthood that is holding the family together! He's the one who gets the additional wives!!

Her CV mentions that during her time in law school, she participated in a one-hour-per-week comedy show on a local radio station.

How/why do sharp-as-a-tack, really brainy, funny people stay mormon? Is that why the 19-year-old winner is not in the mission field?

This is like one of those "What's wrong with this picture?" deals!

What have you against eating your cake and having it too?

Some mormons have mastered this. A little porn shoulder on Friday night never did hurt a little trip through the Temple early session Saturday morning. You’re happy, grandma’s happy and lunch goes off without a hitch.

You and I just happen to not like the cake they like.

Well now that a Mormon has earned public esteem through both her cartoon captions and her Jeopardy appearance, the rock truly will roll forth.

This is what the prophets foretold.

Then ‘splain it to me, Lucy/Gladys, why isn’t the 19-year-old mormon male out on his mission?

Shame on him!

What if he was working on that caption during zoom church?

Jesus,

As an esteemed BYU alumnus, surely you remember how the GAs used to tell elite Mormon athletes that their mission was to play football for the Lord's University. I surmise that "the 19-year-old Mormon male" was likewise told that his mission was as Cartoonist to the World.

Think of him as a desk-bound Steve Young--and have Ricky pass the chocolates!

Mom and son have a different last name. Also notice the photo behind her of herself and two sons. No adult male in the photo. She's teaching at BYU, so she's in good standing. Perhaps remarried? Hard to say what happened to the fella's father. But kudos to him for being in college (not BYU) instead of wasting his time on a "mission".

I suspect she and the boy's dad are still married. The dad is also an instructor at the law school and the boy-winner has the same last name as the putative dad.

She appears to be the more 'cloutier' of the two instructors, but per their CVs, they are both top 1%'ers, except for being Mormons...

And yes, hopefully the boy is lost from the church.

She may have kept her maiden name as her professional name.

That’s exactly what I did!
