Smithfield? It's what 7 or 8 miles from Logan?
Is the plan to eventually put a temple in every town in Utah?

Oslo? The church claims ~4500 members in all of Norway.

In addition to Norway, Belgium and Austria are on the list.

Are the brethren really that clueless when it comes to Western Europe?

Western Europe is a lost cause for the Morg. It's gone. This is particularly so in Belgium where according to official stats, Church membership is just 6,605 in total. Considering that the Church membership in the UK is close to 190,000, surely the UK would have been a more logical location for a temple?

There are more members in Scotland than some of these countries but no temple. The same goes for Ireland (both parts).

It has been over 25 years, but when I was in Finland working on a boiler project I went to visit a distant cousin who was a Mormon as well. I was in my waning days as a TBM. He told me they built a temple in Helsinki as they had such a surplus of funds they needed to spend it. Very little money was sent to the US due to Finnish laws. I suspect Norway is similar - few members with nothing to spend the tithing on. Of course the monies could be used for charitable purposes though that would not be in line with Mormon church values.

The Mormon church building temples is like Koch franchising McDonalds. They won’t stop until there is one on every block, regardless of need.

Like anyone ever needed a temple

Like anyone ever needed McDonalds!

The Mormon church is the McDonald’s of religion. You can walk into any temple anywhere in the world and get the same thing.

The 20 new temples will be built in the following locations:

Oslo, Norway

Brussels, Belgium

Vienna, Austria

Kumasi, Ghana

Beira, Mozambique

Cape Town, South Africa

Singapore, Republic of Singapore

Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Cali, Colombia

Querétaro, México

Torreón, México

Helena, Montana

Casper, Wyoming

Grand Junction, Colorado

Farmington, New Mexico

Burley, Idaho

Eugene, Oregon

Elko, Nevada

Yorba Linda, California

Smithfield, Utah

There are 41 temples currently under construction or renovation, and despite the pandemic, ground was broken for 21 new temples in 2020.

The church is “building now for the future,” the church president said.

I know Yorba Linda, CA pretty well. The second-largest employer in the city is the local Costco.

During the election cycle, very expensive pick-up trucks would race along Imperial Hwy with huge Trump flags flapping from stands in the pick-up beds.

If they don't already have it set up, I know they'll be looking for someone to donate land for the temple. And it'll be on a hill and become an eyesore.

It really is like how Scientology builds a lot of buildings that sit empty, and the same will happen to these temples, or they'll keep the others not that far empty. At least, in Yorba Linda, they can see if there's land next to the Nixon Library. It's just going to make the Newport Beach and Redlands temples emptier than they probably are.

Land in North Wilmington is scarce.

The church in Wilmington sits in the back of a ritzier development which backs up to a derelict train track.

The stake center in Newark is on an impressive secondary highway.

The President’s residence is in suburban New Castle County, but not somewhere where a temple would fit in well.

I can’t think of anywhere that would be good for a temple in northern Delaware and Philadelphia is already plenty close.

There are 3 properties for sale in Northern Delaware that are about the right size to be used for temples.

The only problem is that they are all old Dupont estates. They'd pretty much have to tear down the (probably historic) buildings that are there. I guess with enough money thrown at the problem, they could get their way.

If they went downstate, they could get the land sizes they want, but then the land wouldn't be where they'd want it.

Or maybe somewhere like Newark Country Club who were massively in arrears on property taxes would work.

And still my hope for a temple in Beaver remains unfulfilled.

How should the Beaver Temple be decorated?

I envision a very narrow front door. The stone placed at the crown of the slit-shaped entrance features a carved relief of Brigham Young as captain of the Good Ship Zion ("Stay in the Boat!"). As couples proceed in for their eternal sealing and the doors part to each side in welcome, they will pause at the entrance, reach up to the stone, and give a good-luck rub of the little man in the boat. A new mormon tradition is born.

168 operating temples

34 temples currently under construction

47 announced temples

total would be 251 if they ever finish all of them

However some temples were "announced" up to 4 years ago and no progress made so some of these may be what computer people call "vaporware" or wishful thinking!

It really makes me wonder about the church's end game. Will there ever come a point when they say, "Okay, we have enough temples!" Must there be a temple in every world city of note? In even the smallest American and Canadian cities?

What about the temples that open only one day a week, that have trouble finding recommend-holding members to staff them and clean them?

Yes!

I also question it especially since Rusty has tried to outdo everything his former rival-Hinckley has done. Privately, Nelson probably wishes that the GBH temple building campaign would have never occurred.

At some point, the temples will drain church resources.

The Russia Temple sticks out like a sore thumb...

Do you think there is a person or small group of people who clock in five days a week at the COB and work from 9:00 to 5:00 on getting the Russia Temple to become a reality?

And to whom would the report, and would it be daily, weekly, monthly ... millennially?

How long before they admit that Lord's work has been stymied?

When you search for info on the Russia temple, first up is this page: https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/russia-temple/

But despite this being an ".org" website, with the church's new official name in it, and looking ever so official, at the bottom left of the site, it says in bold red letters,

"Disclaimer

"NOT an official website of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"

What's that all about?

Thank you, Tyson. That was an interesting read.

I was particularly struck by the following paragraph... If I ever return to activity in the holy mormon church of latter-day bank vaults, this paragraph will have been the impetus:

"In preparation for a full-time mission, I received my endowment in the Bountiful Utah Temple, the newest temple of the Church at the time, on my 19th birthday.  The next weekend, my mom and I drove from Pocatello to attend sessions at seven different temples in Utah in three days.  Ever since, the highlight of any vacation for me is the opportunity to attend a temple, especially a temple I have not visited before."

Apparently Scientology collects staggering amounts of money from its members, then builds useless obtrusive and mostly empty buildings to show the world that its work is going forth and they need more money.

If you haven't seen the Netflix series on Scientology, you might watch and compare their tactics to those of LDS, Inc.

I looked at Burley Idaho on the map. I sneezed and the cursor moved me to another cow pasture, lol.

Burley seems to be only 45 minutes away from Twin Falls. I can't imagine that temple or any LDS temple busy for that matter.

I sort of understand the Elko NV one. It's a good 4 hr drive to Reno, but I question how many church members actually live there.

Options: ReplyQuote
Posted by: dagny ( )
Date: April 05, 2021 11:27AM

The Burley one has me stumped too.

There might be a couple of old farmers there. Maybe they have money and can't drive or something. Maybe there is nothing for the old people to do in such places. I don't get it. Burley does not fit the land investment pattern unless it becomes a bigger truck stop. ;-)

Options: ReplyQuote
Posted by: elderolddog ( )
Date: April 05, 2021 11:34AM

Here's how Burley could make sense:

Build the temple on donated land, and either get more land donated or buy it up cheap now.

After the temple has its groundbreaking, announce a housing development and reel in the CA ex-pats who think what a great place it would be to live.

I think I have it. Temples are more like shrines than anything more useful to their spreading their gospel to dead or living people.

Throw up as many shrines as possible to keep physical reminders of Mormonism all over the world.

Other religions do it small and without purse or script. Mormons do it backed by 100 bullion American dollars.

I think Burley has a Walmart, but I may have the wrong town. I've stopped at a Walmart on my way to my sister's in Hagerman in some little town. I would be surprised if the Twin Falls once gets much use. My sister purposely lives there because there aren't nearly as many mormons as in Utah, though my sister still goes to church to make her husband happy and I think she thinks our dead parents would want her to go (she told me that once). None of her friends are active mormon. None of her kids are mormon any longer.

The two proposed temples in Mexico . . .

Both are north of Mexico City.

The Mexican drug lords are dug in in Jalisco and Michoacan, which are west and south of Mexico City, respectively.

The Utah mental-drug lords are missing the boat because a temple would make an awesome stash house of the lord.

Montana and Wyoming? The total human population is only 1.65 million people. To compare, Utah has 3.2 million people.

How many LDS members (no less active members) could there possibly be in Montana and Wyoming?

What a previous poster stated about money being used in certain European countries to build empty, useless temples since the money can't/isn't trafficked to Salt Lake City HQ explains a lot!

I lived in Helena, Montana for five years and only met one Mormon family so I was surprised to see the announcement. Helena has a huge Catholic presence and a beautiful cathederal.

But I can see why they chose Helena for a mctemple because of its location to other population centers like Missoula, Great Falls and Bozeman.

Like many other recently announce temples I wouldn't anticipate groundbreaking anytime soon.
