Mormons have something in common with the Processed Food Lords. I am not talking about the need for sugary big gulpy drinks, salty fried foods, and Green Jello topped with Cool Whipped Corn Syrup.

I am referring to Mormonism being the problem while claiming to be the fix. Consider this metaphor I found in last nights science section:

Heinz, the processed food giant, bought Weight Watchers in 1978 for $72 million. Unilever, which sells Klondike Bars and Ben and Jerry's ice cream paid $2.3 billion for Slim Fast in 2000. Nestle, maker of chocolate bars and Hot Pockets, purchased Jenny Craig in 2006 for $600 million. In 2010 the private equity firm that owns Cinnabon and Carvel ice cream purchased Atkins Nutritionists. Most of these brands were sold later to other parent companies, but, what they were doing--eating from both ends--is not uncommon and rather profitable.

Get you fat and then make bucks off your weight loss. At least Marie Osmond got a job out of it.

Make you feel bad about yourself--the natural man an enemy to god-- then sell you redemption. Neither of these ideas do you need anymore than you really need a hot pocket or Krispy Kreme.

The interesting thing about addiction is that not everyone who tries Cocaine or Heroin becomes addicted. Not everyone who gets sucked into religion becomes addicted. Exmos being living proof. Much of the outcome has to do with what set of genes we came into the world with most likely, sez I. I find this explaining why against all odds, meaning against all evidence, very smart people stay in the Mormon church while we ask ourselves often here--why?

Can you be addicted to religion? Is there a difference between a drug addict robbing someone to get a fix and a Mormon parent kicking their gay kid to the curb to get an exaltation? Is psychological wounding more damaging than the physical. After all, parents can teach their kids anything they like and this must be respected in our society. Isn't it odd that "society" is usually considered with a positive connotation. Perhaps certain notions are addictive?

The Mormon church. It's a twofer. The poison and the elixer--one stop shopping.

PS

In another section of another paper I was alerted to the fact that Krispy Kreme is selling a special edition Oreo Cookie Over-the-top Doughnut only until April 18th. I am sending the driver to get some before they are gone.

I am hopeless at times.

O. M. G. Krispy Kreme on a Burger! That is sick. And, as a lead in to a faith promoting story yet. Only in Utah . . .

We got the Oreo Krispy Kremes for break this morning. I couldn't finish one. One person loved loved loved it and the rest like me didn't even finish them.

Mormonism is a sweet confection for sure, but I see it in the category of fizzy lifting drinks.

Get your meat after your milk in a Krispy Kreamy bun!

Great point and call out.

The snake oil sales people provide the venom as well.

How many people need porn to attempt fulfillment in a sexual existence? Nature provided the motivation and modern times the oil. But in Mormonism they provide the stick to beat yourself with and the salve to help it try and heal. It never heals completely.

>> Make you feel bad about yourself--the natural man an enemy to god-- then sell you redemption. Neither of these ideas do you need anymore than you really need a hot pocket or Krispy Kreme.

The same thought occurred to me. I am okay. Whatever little "sins" I commit are meaningless in the scheme of things. I don't need to sweat the small stuff. If God is unhappy with his creation, that's on him. No parent in their right mind requires his children to be perfect.

If you also have an unhealthy obsession with always being good, then that makes you a ripe target for con artists. You tend to assume, wrongly, that everyone else tries to be good as well and always has your best interest in mind. It makes it harder to detect the lies, to detect the con.

They create the disease and then claim to be the ones with the cure.

In my case, I'm going to say it's all part of a diversified portfolio. ;-)

One of these days, you're going to turn around, and I'm going to be standing there...

And I'm gonna say, "Órale, guey, como puede ser que eres tan chulo?"

I'm still working on what to yell as I'm being dragged off by security.

The disease that isn’t a disease (the profane), and the fix, which fixes nothing (the sacred): and then there’s the money exchange between the two.

Despite trying, I have yet to learn to see religion in these terms, probably because I cannot help but see the sacred and the profane as real experiences, if not real things in the universe.

To further a theme I shared with bradley, what offends me most about Mormonism is the horribly childish aesthetics. Mormonism refuses to allow their members to become adult. This goes beyond the childish culinary sensibility and the Disneyfication of everything else. Fully grown members into their 40s and beyond cannot help but babble baby talk to one another. Their aesthetic sensibility is permanently arrested.

But as much as I deplore Mormon sensibility, and a religious culture that encourages infantilization at every turn, I still see more there (and far worse) than a simple selling of a fix to something that wasn’t broken in the first place. Mormons do have a sense of the sacred and a sense of the profane.

Consider Éric Rohmer‘s Six Moral Tales:

https://www.cabinetmagazine.org/kiosk/rothfeld_becca_1_april_2021.php

Snippet:

“Likely unbeknownst to its author, Trilling’s proposal [on what underlies Nabokov’s Lolita] echoes an idiosyncratic and ingenious theory propounded in print just one year earlier. In the lunatic, luminous Erotism, published in 1957, the libertine philosopher Georges Bataille suggests that eroticism is a question of the violation of social prohibitions. If everything is permitted, then nothing is perverted. Advocates of free love, the seeming allies of pleasure, are in fact its most dangerous adversaries: when bohemians “ceased to believe in Evil,” Bataille writes, they precipitated “a state of affairs in which, since eroticism was no longer a sin and since they could no longer be certain of doing wrong, eroticism was fast disappearing.” Without violation, there is no rapture; without taboo, there is no violation; and without restriction, there is no taboo. In Bataille’s terms, “the sacred”—the erotic, with all its attendant dishevelments and divestments of self—requires “the profane,” the mundane mores constraining our everyday behavior. The profane is less exalted than the sacred, but it is equally necessary: each perfects the other. A curious consequence of this view is that the more repressive and puritanical a culture, the more considerable its erotic potential. The best sex, probably, was the sex people had when they really believed they would go to hell for it—but craved it so badly that they had it anyway.”

Do Mormons have a more delicious sex life than the free wheelin’ libertine? Hardly, since Mormonism holds to an inversion of Bataille’s terms: the erotic charge of a chance falling in love with a stranger is considered profane, while the mundane constraints of the day to day tasks of family and church life are held as sacred.

This inversion is a spiritual crime. Despite all the rhetoric on ‘the spiritual’, Mormons are least equipped to experience it. It’s odd, I know, but Mormons are a people devoid of spirituality, despite how much they talk about it.

What’s worse, the Mormon inversion of the sacred and the profane, or the libertine belief that there is no sacred and profane (and therefore no possibility for morality, but that’s another post)? I think the Mormon inversion is far more damaging. There is always the possibility of the sacred descending upon the libertine; but no matter how often it descends upon the Mormon, it will always be mislabelled the profane. If you think about it, the Mormon inversion is satanic.

(May have lost my way in this post. It may not make sense. But I’ve lost time enough to fix it. I apologize. If nothing else, the link is to a good article.)

Or diabolical genius. It goes along with my thoughts that insanity is basically an astral containment problem. Beings both good and bad from the astral realm could have gotten to him so some great truths were revealed as well as some great falsehoods. You might characterize religion as a kind of divine madness. There are great ideas in religion, but you have to remember their founders were teetering on the edge of sanity. A breeze could have pushed Joseph over, and maybe it did.

If the church is willing to define “prophet” as “mentally disturbed”, I’m willing to sustain Joseph Smith as a prophet. However, that means the church does not have a living prophet. I have to concede that the current church leadership is not clinically insane.

Mormonism was designed to screw with your mind in subtle yet terrifying ways. I don’t think Joseph was that smart. Maybe he wanted to be a prophet, played with matches, and started a fire that went out of control. Like Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer’s apprentice.

The Sacred and the Profane. Hmmm

Seem's one man's profane is another man's sacred. Those words are sidestepping one-size-fits-all definition as words with religious connotations often do.

Will look at the link later. Thanks. I'm actually too tired to compute such a deep post, and just enjoying what I find to be an amusing connection at the moment between words with commercial connotations, like say, the Naked and the Arcane as Mormonism is stripped of one secret after another.

I still am at a loss as to how I ended up with twins. Never was a thing that crossed my mind.

But one is addicted to the church. The other has been addicted to hard drugs and alcohol. He stopped both by himself and a doctor who gave him suboxone, but he has other addictions where "drugs" are concerned as he NEEDS his meds to get by in life. But he often points out his sister's addiction to the mormon church.

If you knew the 2, you'd see it. My therapist says one is dark and one is light. And they show it. She is blonde, he has brown hair, but he used to be goth. You still see it. They were close until they made the division.
