If I heard it correctly, co-director Tyler Measom says that Gaylen Rust basically tried to buy him off by paying "back" nearly double his incurred expenses plus a million to make some other film, in order to stop making "Murder Among the Mormons." This was apparently before Jared Hess joined up.

This one (at the 4 minute mark) says that they viewed Hofmann's psychological profile after filing a FOIA request.

It said he's a narcissist (no surprise) but also a sexual deviant. One of the other clips said he tortured cats when he was younger. Hofmann seems to be a little darker than presented in the 3 Netflix episodes.

Torturing animals is the sort of thing that would move him from the narcissistic diagnosis to sociopathy. Given his utter disregard for the lives he destroyed, that makes sense.

Yeah, my teeth curled when he said that he didn’t feel bad about the murders because they would die at some point anyway (or words to that effect). I think I pointed out in one of the other related threads that it’s not his place to choose the appointed time for anyone to die. I saw something else today that said killing made John Wayne Gacy feel like a god. I agree that Hofmann’s ills likely go well beyond narcissism.

Gaylin more than likely had sold several Hofmann forgeries. Not coins. Hofmann had moved on to forging paper money.

In the 1800s numerous businesses and some individuals made their own paper currency. This was due to first a lack of physical currency in the more remote parts of the country and second think of it as a for of pay check. The factory gives you a $5 note drawn on them. You can exchange it for goods and services at local stores or deposit it at the local bank.

Sometime they served as promissory notes.

A $10.00 note from a Spanish Fork company recently sold for $20,000.00

Rust specialised in early paper money. In fact Rust wrote a book on the notes that is used to this day by many dealers.

Alvin acknowledged buying some notes attributed to Jim Bridger. Who knows what else he and Gaylin bought and sold.

Dredging up the Hofmann story could have called numerous business deals into question.

IMO, Mark Hofmann has what is known as a Dark Triad Personality.

The Dark Triad Personality is composed of three traits: Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and Narcissism.

Strange how the supposedly inspired and discerning GA's couldn't pick up on this from the get go.

Oaks had a murderer standing in front of him in his office, yet he had the audacity to defend the White Salamander Letter and tell everyone to be more discerning in what they read.

To me, this is a huge lesson learned that rank-and-file mormons ought to take away from this episode.

It is remarkable how little impact that episode seems to have had on the membership.

ETA: It is a damning indictment of the leadership.
