I had a cousin who posted she had been nominated as a WOW in her district in Utah. https://www.wowutah.org.
Honestly, I had never heard of this was a little appalled by the ceremony. I kept thinking, what about the other women, aren't they Woman of Worth? To me, this is just misogynistic BS initiated from the Elders.

Via a quick review, I don't think the church has anything to do with WOW.

What calamady has your cousin survived?

I thought it had LDS support but I could be wrong. I can't imagine my TBM cousin getting involved in anything non-LDS. When I go back to SLC, I only see a few of my LDS relatives. They are like insurance salesman, they are always selling.

Color me skeptical. Among the organization's advisors and board members, I'm seeing a whole lot of motivational speakers and well-meaning volunteers. What I'm not seeing is people with solid credentials in counseling, social work, and academic and career advising.

"Today, nearly 50 women have transformed their lives and can declare publicly, 'I AM A WOMAN OF WORTH.'"

Yes, WTH, no one needs this BS to declare themselves to be worthy, or even worse, to be "of worth" = expensive!

They had something similar in the Carnation ward a long-time back; a big fuss over a select few ( perhaps 2 or 3 as I recall); everyone in 'church dress' to honor them (street clothes are NEVER ENOUGH for church activities!!)

me: nothing 'wrong' with that, but

Q: what's the reason?

A: apparently someone thought that making doughnuts while the men were at the Important Meetings wasn't good enough!!!

I notice this was founded by a woman unless Judee Guay is a man. You never know these days. And seems to be plenty of women with a say-so on things in the middle.

I see a misogynistic side possibly...as women can be as misogynistic as men. I am troubled by any automatic assumptions that when something is seen as negative for women --- the men to blame. Must be those Elders again! Or, maybe the womenfolk are doing this on their own?

If this is successful, my bet is the fun won't be free for long. There's gold in them there hills.

I perused their site...

There is pride taken by the lady founders in having been treated shoddily and overcome their abuse.

And they want to give back. Judy Guay's story is like that, and then she found true love and decided to 'give back' and so she founded this to help used/abused women overcome their difficulties.

This is why I asked Moe about what his cousin had 'overcome' so that she was on the organization's radar.

They have themselves convinced that they can help downtrodden women, and I don't think they charge the women for their service(s).

Their FB page is loaded with testimonies from those they've saved.

But I still haven't figured out what it means to be 'nominated' by WoWUtah!

Thanks. Always good to flesh things out.

I still don't like the gold star aspect, but that's just me.

"WoWUtah assists courageous women who have lost everything in order to escape abuse and polygamy, overcome substance abuse, and survived a debilitating illness. We are committed to helping these women as they strive to regain their hope and strength to build a life of security for themselves and their families."

Yeah...this shit needs to be stopped. Pronto!!

It is my opinion that EVERY human being man or woman has worth.
Gender has nothing to do with it
women are as valuable as men anytime.
SO LET IT BE WRITTEN
SO LET IT BE DONE

To elderdog. I have no idea if she was overcoming something. My cousin seems happily married with 3 children. Everybody could probably give an example of something they have overcome, some worse than others. As someone else said on this thread, I just don't understand the gold star aspect.

From what I read here this is a group/organization designed to rebuild a sense of value in women who have suffered through a painful experience that has shattered their sense of self worth. Why would anyone assume that its title is somehow an assault on the value of women not needing the process?

“women who have suffered through a painful experience that has shattered their sense of self worth”

Like Mormonism?

women have been under-rewarded & under-utilized in ChurchCo 'forever'; if taking a few steps to be recognized for their accomplishments & future opportunities, I see nothing wrong.

'of course' ChurchCo is too cowardly to sponsor or get onboard this, No Surprise there!

So why do more women like church than men?

Why do so many wives divorce their husband when he quits church? You would think they'd love to escape with him.

The choices are that women are dumb or weak (misogynist view).

Or, there are things in church that women like, such as pressure on men to be the sole breadwinner so she can fulfill her biological role as mother, and then retire. And the church gives her monopoly control over her husband's sexual urges, shaming for dirty thoughts, porn, etc. Which allows her to not have to do sex as often.

I could go on, but I just don't think women are as dumb or weak as do others. I think there are better reasons there are more women in church.

Here we go again.

Projection.

By calling your opponents "misogynistic" you think you can escape that label yourself. But anyone who graduated from third grade can see the linguistic legedermain you are trying to pull off.

--------------------
> I could go on, but I just don't think women are as

That's right. You are motivated by respect for women.

-----------------
> I think there are

There are. But you'll never learn them because you have landed on the square you like.

Yellow Dye No. 2 versus Yellow Dye No. 9. It's still just a Twinkie.

MeThinks the answers are individual & in many cases more complicated than we believe.

There are people, males & females, who would rather just come to church on Sunday & not get involved $ or engaging with it the rest of the week.

There are people who, for a variety of reasons, don't have time or interest in becoming leaders.

lots more reasons, most of which, IMHO, aren't exclusive to either gender.

WOW reminds of a life insurance policy I had over 50 years ago.

It's actually called Woodman of World.

Dad started the policies for me and my sibs, and after getting out of high school it was given to us to keep up the premiums. After a few years I gave it up and cashed it in. If I remember right I got about $200 for over 15 years of premium payments.

Shouldn't this read, "Between them, they have three children, two sons and a daughter and their spouses."

"Between them, they have three children, two boys and a girl and their spouses."
https://www.wowutah.org/board-members

It just looks like a weird baby-announcement way to say this information to me.

Who wrote these write ups for the founder and her husband. Awkward.

"Lewie is married to Judee, and between them, they have three children between the two of them, two sons and a daughter as well as two daughters-in-laws and a son-in-law."

How long do they have to be free from polygamy???

"All women applying must be drug and alcohol free for a year, out of their domestic violence situation and longer in polygamy and well enough to attend all Worthshops."

https://www.wowutah.org/get-involved

And they get a free makeover?

"At the end of the program, each Woman of Worth will also receive a makeover by our team of stylists and fashion experts."

I think this is a terrible use of the word "worth" but hey, Mormonism thinks an interview makes one worthy.

Ms. Dorothy is a woman of worthless--according to any remotely Mormon standard.

Divorced. One kid. Employed. No church anything.

ZERO interest in a makeover EVER. Anyone who doesn't like how I look can avert their eyes.

So let me understand this--
--women who are in abusive marriages--worthless.
--Women in polygamous marriages--worthless.
--women with drug and alcohol trouble--worthless.

F that noise.

Twice.

WOW = Women of Worth.

Does that make a MOM?
