I grew up in catholic schools. One of the many teachings that I found profound in that religion was the emphasis on sins of omission. I remember the priest emphasizing that these types of sins determined our character and what kind of a person we would become. I see the Pope revisit many of the same ideas in his speeches and I am glad that so many people have reacted to this message. Some are calling it "putting Christ back in Christianity".

First, Mormonism does not officially teach many of the horrible things they are accused of inculcating in people's minds, in fact they deny such teachings in public. However they ALLOW people to believe them in order to control their thoughts and hearts. For example, the mormon church opposes racism in every form, (apparently they always have) however they omit issuing any apology or retract any doctrinal teaching, they refuse to explain why they ask members to marry within their race or why for so long, their official stand excluded black members from full fellowship.

They never officially teach about the 3 Nephites, bullet proof garments, the nature of homosexuality...but they are happy to let you believe whatever faith promoting lie they come up with as long as it keeps you under their thumb.

People build entire lives based on these omissions. How many of us married too early, without enough education. How many had as many kids as we could before we were ready? All from something someone read and interpreted, from a talk at BYU, from quote in a RS lesson. Look up the LDS church's official stand on any of these issues, you will find nothing of substance. They omitted the truth and now you pay for it.

How many gay folks killed themselves, how many black people grew up and died believing "doctrines" that vanished in the wind?

They teach by rumor and implications, they admonish by myths and ignorance and they lead by assumption and deception, all while EVERYONE is expected to remain blind to the evidence that they are SO far from the teachings of Christ.

I feel like Mormonism thrives in the void left open by their inability to see or think outside the outwardly.

This gap, this cavern, that exist between the stated purpose of their doctrine and the failure of their actions and their teachings, turn mormons into creatures of outward appearance. Their motives go unchecked and their hearts are filled with the filth the outwardly reject, they become monsters of hypocrisy.

As a child, my priest used to personify such people with Judas. He had a high calling, knew all the words and did all the right things. But inside, where only God could see, he was an evil, traitorous individual whose internal compass was only guided with gain and power.

As I see so many mormons convicted of fraud, child abuse, and many other sins of moral turpitude, it makes me wonder how someone who had all those lessons, shed all those tears and did so much to set themselves up look like a good person, could ever get to the point where their sins of omission could so overwhelmingly destroy their moral decorum.
I can't help but smile in sarcasm as I hear them spout about their right to tell others about what kind of marriage they can have. I roll my eyes when I hear them spout about the invisible blessings of tithing, their intellectual growth by blind obedience, their strict health code that keeps unclean things out, as they glut at chuck-a-rama on sundays and come home from church to a porn binge.

This I feel, is the the source of the sour taste that so many are finding in Mormonism. The changed history, the homophobia, the sexism, the racism, the money grubbing...are just symptoms of this: "Choose the RIGHT, wish in your heart otherwise".

Sure some of us will say no big deal, while others invested more, even all, into this cult. However the lies of omission are ironically glossed over when talking about the church, but they remain their foundation and biggest sin.

Many corporations operate this way. Having a squeaky-clean policy manual, but allowing toxic practices to exist if it increases profits.

Wells-Fargo will neither confirm nor deny this statement. ;)

Let's consider (paragraph #2) one of your charges:

" the mormon church opposes racism in every form, (apparently they always have) however they omit issuing any apology or retract any doctrinal teaching, they refuse to explain why they ask members to marry within their race or why for so long, their official stand excluded black members from full fellowship."

They never said what they did was wrong, nor did they offer an apology--let alone a program to redress harm done. They simply say they'll stop doing it, and "move on."

Corporations do this. Let's say a corporation was credibly charged with discrimination. They deny it, but the evidence mounts, and a regulator steps in. "Okay!" they respond. "We don't admit to having discriminated this way, but we commit ourselves to never doing this in the future."

Thus, the "cease and desist" order (or agreement).

Oftentimes, this will satisfy people. But then you get people like RfM'ers who keep reminding those people of what had earlier transpired, but was never thoroughly addressed. To do THAT means admitting that it actually occurred, and was instigated by church doctrine (prophets).

What do you think about this?

I don't think those two sentences necessarily follow each other per se.
