Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Here's what the Mayo Clinic says about it:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/shingles/symptoms-causes/syc-20353054"Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles."
_____
So, it's not an either/or situation. If you have had chickenpox you can get shingles, unfortunately. That's why there's a vaccine against shingles that is recommended for people 50 and over (two doses).
Children can receive the chickenpox vaccine, which cuts down the incidence of a full-blown case of the pox but, unfortunately, does not prevent shingles in later life.
