Hey it has been a while and I have been curious about something. I have been traveling a lot, and generally all Marriott hotels or their brands are really good. But I wonder if I am a hypocrite when I stay there and pay money that goes to the Marriotts and than into the pockets of the Mormon Church. And of course having a book of Mormon by your bedside is weird. I would like to know if anyone here still stays in Marriott hotels and how you feel about it. Also there are a lot of brands owned by that company (ritz carlton, W, ect). In short, am I a hypocrite if I stay in a Marriott Hotel or even one of their brands?

Most of your room rent money prolly goes to a franchisee.

Marriott doesn't own all of those properties.

Get and indelible sharpie pen. Find the BOM in your hotel room. Write "www.exmormon.org" on the side of the pages so anyone who picks the book up will see it.

Marriott International is a publicly-traded company. Lots of people and organizations own its stock.

If you're worried, remember that they sell tons of alcohol and used to offer lots of porn. Plus the company is LGBT-friendly.

I have to admit, I get tired of ex-mo's wanting to boycotting mormon owned businesses.

Do you know where the money goes that you give all the other businesses you frequent? Do you know what they donate to or buy with it, what party they support with it, etc?

If you don't like what a business has to offer, don't go there. But stopping because you used to be a mormon is ridiculous in my opinion. But you're free to make that choice if you want to.

If a business is actively discriminating against people, then I would not support it....like a bakery that won't bake for a gay wedding.

Some ex-mo's need to learn how to "live and let live" a bit more after leaving the church.

Usually my hotel of choice. I can't go through life seeing everything as some kind of revenge thing.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-marriott-hotels-specific-ownership-210012901.html

Marriott owns very few hotels. Most Marriotts are franchises; others are properties managed by the company. The article above does a high-level breakdown of the categories.

Before the pandemic, I had two annual activities that required me to travel to the same two towns each year, and in both cases, I stayed at Marriotts because they were closest to the events and had the best value.

After room taxes, the franchise fees the Marriott Corporation would receive from my stays was probably on the order of $12-$24, depending on the exact franchising fees for the hotels I stayed at which per the article range from 2% to 4% of room rates.

The dividend per payout ratio for Marriott for 2016 to 2019 averaged about 40%. Assuming (extremely) generously that my $12-$24 was pure profit, then the dividends paid out on it would have been $5-$10.

Note: the Marriott family own 18% of company shares.

I don't know whether they have a different class stock, but it looks like my stays would fund maximally $1-$2 of their dividends, and thereby maximally 10 to 20 cents in tithing.

Meh. You know that it is no longer a thing that represents the family. I like the fact that they have some nice resident suites, which my family always needed when we were being transferred and needed a small apartment with kitchen, etc. But last time I was in one, it STILL came with a Gideon's Bible and a BoM. I began inscribing the Books of Norman with an honest critique of the book and of the religion.

I'm curious as to why the chain is still putting BoMs in rooms when the family's ownership of stock has been so greatly reduced.

Boycotts are like Protests. None of them have worked since the sixties--with or without Jane Fonda.

Enjoy your Marriott Hotel. Any other hotel chain is likely doing something pretty awful with their profits as well. I'd be more concerned with what they are paying the cleaning crew and whether you can get a great martini while you read your BoM.

I'm afraid you will need a lot more practice if you want to achieve hypocrite-hood.

You can stay wherever you want. You don't even have to read the books. Or, you can come prepared (with your very own self-inking mormonthink.com stamp) for that very occasion.

It doesn't matter where you stay... as long as you don't stay there.

Lets look at this from the other side.

The church owns at least $100,000,000,000.00 in stock in many many businesses.

We don't necessarily have a complete breakdown of what the holdings currently are.

But..... I'm willing to bet that day by day you contribute to companies the chur h owns at least a portion of.

So basically doesn't matter if you stay at a Marriott hotel or a competitor. The church probably owns a portion of the competition as well.
