Lesley Gore performs "You Don't Own Me" on the 1964 T.A.M.I show.

She does the high volume parts fine, but she wanders off key in the opening. Ack! A high school memory, now tarnished.

Another video came up in which Patti Smith looks for all the world like Mick Jagger's sister, a resemblance I had never noted before.

I always thought that song was a valid entry for the protofeminist movement. The irony, or contrast, was that the sentiments expressed in "It's My Party" and "Now It's Judy's Turn To Cry" were quite the opposite--the teen girl devastated (or elated) by her relationship with that jerk "Johnny," whoever he was.

But oh, that flip! Probably needed half of a can of hair spray.

But they don't.

It's my body, and I'll do what I want to.

Yes, just as Donald Trump is now urging.

And he encouraged others to get vaccinated. But he emphasizes that it's a personal decision.

After all, the vaccines were developed during his administration. Remember when experts were certain a vaccine could never be developed in a half year--that it would take at least a full year, probably two or three? And how the Enlightened swore they'd never submit to a vaccine developed under his auspices? Mia Farrow comes to mind. People posted side-by-side tweets of her swearing off the untrustworthy "Trump vaccine," only to later brag that she took the shot.

My, how times have changed!

I'm still abstaining. I'm not anti-vax, just this one--for me. I put my faith in certain health protocols (exercise, Vitamin D3, Melatonin, and God) and (so far) the blessings of a robust immune system.

BTW, my chainsaw gash is completely healed. Ugly but healthy scarring. I promised my better half: no more solo chain-sawing, and I've just bought some chainsaw chaps. Now, back to deforestation!

Let's get this thread back on track. I'm sure you'll all appreciate this interpretation by the late, great baritone Klaus Nomi:

He has said that if his followers don't get vaccinated, he won't have a lot of followers left. That renders his conviction personal and self-interested: he's reversed himself for a reason.

I do remember that. I also remember being told by a vice president in one of the big pharmaceutical companies that there was a 90% chance of having at least once vaccine out in the fourth quarter and a 100% chance by the first quarter of last year.

Yeah, you can call Mia Farrow "enlightened" if you want. I personally don't expect much from Hollywood stars and think you are using her to tarnish an entire category of people who probably only exist as such in your mind.

Don't forget sheer luck. My hope is that a combination of luck and your robust immune system will suffice.

caffiend in chaps. The mind boggles.

Otherwise I'm glad you've recovered from your misadventure.

I'm holding out hope for a Stephen Miller performance of that song--ideally in drag.

You don't think YOU need the vaccine. Bully for you. You don't give a shit about others. We get it.

Several posters here repeatedly state that "natural immunity" protects a person from contracting COVID. Experts say that some protection can arise from previous CV infection but that it is not thought to be long-lasting. Too, a significantly higher percentage of people who have had the virus but are unvaccinated contract the Delta variant than do those who have had the virus but have been vaccinated.

https://www.health.com/condition/infectious-diseases/coronavirus/natural-immunity-vaccine-delta-variant

Excerpts:

"As the Delta variant surges across the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that anyone eligible should get the vaccine—including those who have been infected with COVID-19 in the past.

"While antibodies from a COVID-19 infection may offer some degree of protection against another future infection (known as "natural immunity"), those who have already had the virus may still be vulnerable—perhaps especially to the Delta variant, the current predominant strain, which is nearly twice as contagious as previous variants. In fact, a study published by the CDC on August 6 compared reinfection rates of people who had previously had COVID-19 and found that unvaccinated individuals were more than twice as likely to be reinfected than fully vaccinated individuals.

"For that reason, experts don't recommend relying on natural immunity alone to prevent a COVID-19 infection."

First time I've ever heard God described as being a health protocol. :)

One of the best songs ever. That and California Nights. The lyrics transcended just a teen girl's relationship with a boy and were easy to relate to our selves. Especially at that age when everybody had rules for you. Catchy tune, great voice.

Of course Lesley Gore was gay as was Dusty Springfield. Them and other gays singing all the great straight love songs. So for a song about not being told what to do, the only way to win in those days was to sing somebody else's love song?

You don't own me, but, they did.
