Why Are So Many Religions started by a Psychopath?

Please note: in case you have any questions as to what a Psychopath is please refer to https://psychopathyis.org/what-is-a-psychopath/

I'm referring to a Psychopath in the Scientific definition of a psychopath: meaning someone who does not have a conscience, and has the characteristics listed by Dr. Robert D. Hare, author of the book "Without Conscience: the Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us"

There are 30 characteristics most commonly found in a Psychopath, according to the Hare PCL-R checklist they include:

1. Excess Glibness" or superficial charm
2. Grandiose sense of self-worth
3. Excess need for stimulation or proneness to boredom
4. pathological lying
5. cunning and manipulativeness
6. lack of remorse or guilt
7. shallow affect (superficial emotional responsiveness) [although they are extremely skilled at PRETENDING and ACTING to mimic emotional responses so that they fool experts]

8. callousness and lack of empathy
9. parasitic lifestyle
10. poor behavioral controls
11. sexual promiscuity
12. early behavior problems
13. lack of realistic long-term goals
14. impulsivity
15. irresponsibility
16. failure to accept responsibility for own actions
17. many short-term marital relationships
18. juvenile delinquency
19. revocation of conditional release
20. criminal versatility

What is baffling to me is why so many people keep glomming on to them, giving them attention and money. Humans are hopelessly stupid as a whole.

Which ones do you have, Elder Berry?

How would you answer each Q on a scale of
0 = item does not apply, 1 = item applies somewhat, 2 = item definitely applies

It's the perfect career for that personality skill set.

No product or proof needed. They get to be an authority figure getting people to do whatever they tell them God wants. People are credulous and want to believe in an afterlife. They make perfect "customers" and will pay money for anyone who herds them around and makes them feel part of a tribe. Psychopaths and grifters are there to take advantage.

Oh good answer! That's true that no product or proof is needed.
Is this what Fawn Brodie was talking about when she described Joseph Smith's personality? Does anyone have her book?

Psychopaths and sociopaths make excellent salespeople. I used to be a stock broker and believe me, the finance industry is full of psychopaths and sociopaths.

It’s about staying on course and not caring who you hurt. It’s about selling to sell regardless of how good the product is. You don’t care if you just put a person’s retirement at risk, you have commissions to make.

All of that is true, but it doesn't answer the question of why so many people are willing to believe them. And the answer to that question is because they *want to* believe that what they are hearing is true. This is especially pertinent when you realize how much money people have invested in the U.S. stock market, especially people who don't know the first thing about how a business is run and what it actually takes for one to succeed.

Because it's easier - and more LUCRATIVE - than any other business or racket.
