I have a relative who is "doing" at home MTC.

The family post photos of missionary in full attire, including name tag,at family meals, activities etc.

Do they have any idea as to how stupid they all look to anyone outside the Morridor ?

Yup...I have a couple nephews doing the same thing now. One is at grandma's house, instead of his parents.

It just occurred to me that that is what the neighbor's son (the bishop) was doing. He's out in the "mission field" now. I was wondering what was going on.

I think it's a good move. There are some who would greatly benefit by staying closer to home than suffering anxiety from being sent away.

What? The Lord's army are all at home with ankle monitors?
This is all getting more pathetic by the moment.

So glad I had to do the real mission all those decades ago. At least there was value in doing something really hard.

This isn't much different from how teenagers used to do mini missions.

On mini missions, teenagers who were too young to serve didn't get any training. Instead they either lived at home or they lived with the elders or sisters who were serving in their stake (as appropriate), for a period of generally 1-4 weeks - usually less than one transfer.

They spent their time with the full-time missionaries doing normal mission activities including tracting, knocking doors, and helping teach discussions - all without the "benefit" of MTC training.

And, frankly, this is almost certainly cheaper than shipping kids to Utah or any of the other MTCs. Consider too that the church used to have eighteen MTCs; they're down to 10 now.

The church is assuredly cutting costs by not bringing in the missionaries who are going to serve in their native language anyway to spend only three weeks at the MTC, unlike the missionaries who had to learn a foreign language and needed the time to get it down well enough before they were sent into the field.

When you add on COVID travel restrictions, it's clear that the church's model of flying kids around the world just can't be sustainable. Mind you, it wasn't sustainable before, it's just more obvious now.

All of us here who are RMs served B.C., Before Covid.

Of course, this is contingent on The Cat NOT finding a news article that results in a cure of this dread for all mankind.

If anyone can, though, it's The Cat!

Cat meets Dog and, next thing you know, fur is flying.

Then it would be my fur because I'm pretty sure that The Cat is one of those hairless cutie-pies.

Next they will be virtual tracting, by hitting up the cam girl sites and trying to share the gospel. Truly, it will be an international experience. The virtual mission president will have to attach a remotely controlled chastity belt, and the White Handbook will state that this must be worn for the duration of the mission. Dreadful.

OK, so when did they (or formerly WE) care about how stupid we look(ed) to anyone outside of mormonism? It's so funny looking at it from the outside in and thinking "did I even HAVE a brain?" but most of us seriously tried to convince ourselves that we looked somewhat normal when we were on the inside. Surprise! We didn't.

This is not to say that there aren't mormons who I love and even respect for many things. There are.

Even a fool's paradise can work if there are enough fools. It's not cheap, though.

My relative in home based MTC is referred to as Elder “ ………” by his bragging family. And they just posted that they went with him to his mission country by cooking a meal from that region. Confused me no end as I didn’t know he’d been shipped out. But the photos showed the whole family eating ethnic food at home with Elder “…..” in white shirt and name tag at the dinner table. SMH.

If he ever gets to his mission country, I have to imagine that the adjustment will be even more jarring with his fake enculturation.
