Patrick Huey contacted HuffPost after reading a story about a Florida-based ICU doctor who broke down on CNN while being interviewed about patients dying of COVID-19. The Texas-based funeral professional, who has worked as an embalmer for the past 30 years and won the South Central Texas Funeral Directors Association’s first-ever Embalmer of the Year award in 2019, offered to share his own harrowing COVID-related experiences, as well as the toll working in the funeral industry during the pandemic is taking on him and his colleagues.

We’ve just had to buckle down and do the best that we can. The internet has been a blessing because it allows all of us embalmers to communicate and find out what issues everyone is having because so much of this has been unlike anything we’ve seen before. We get bodies out of ICU regularly, but not in the condition that these COVID bodies are in. They’re tremendously swollen. If they’ve been on a ventilator, that often completely runs down their immune system. It also opens them up to a lot of sepsis and secondary infections that tend to hang around hospitals, like penicillin-resistant staph infections.

These folks were so swollen they were completely unrecognizable. We were also getting sent a lot of people who had died from COVID in nursing homes back at that time, and many of them had not been dead very long at all. Generally when we embalm, we utilize a major artery to inject the embalming fluid and we use its adjoining vein for drainage. The blood tends to settle out because it’s no longer flowing and it’ll gravitate to the dependent part of the body. The longer a body sits, the more blood clots that they develop. I was having people that had only been dead for a few hours and there were major clotting issues. The clots were the size of pancakes ― you never, never see those with someone who didn’t die of COVID.

I’ve been doing this for 30 years and pretty much everywhere I’ve worked has been medium to high volume. I’m not one of those embalmers that works at a place that just does 50 or 60 bodies a year. So I’ve done this long enough and I’ve seen enough that I would know when something different pops up. COVID is unlike anything I’ve seen before.

Many of the people who were in the ICU were on ventilators, and they put adhesive patches on their cheeks. They can easily become septic and they drip that septic saliva on the sides of their faces and the skin in that area gets infected. We were literally receiving bodies with huge lesions on their cheeks or [patches that had gone] gangrene. The sad part is the families of these people, at that point, hadn’t been allowed to see their loved ones during the several weeks that they were in the ICU. So the body comes out in an almost unrecognizable condition, and then you have to explain to their family that their loved one doesn’t look anything like what they should.

Despite the fact that I specialize in postmortem reconstruction ― accidents, trauma, stuff like that ― when the bodies are that swollen, there is very little I can do to eliminate that. And for a lot of these families, it’s just a tremendous shock. I’ve had husbands and wives die within days of each other. I’ve seen entire families wiped out. It’s horrible.

Thanks for posting. Nice to get a slant from an embalmer or someone on the front lines for Covid.

What I am tired of is hearing an anti-vaxxer who got their information from a friend of a friend whose cousin works as a receptionist at a dermatologists office and she said she heard one of the nurses aides say . . .

The only time I've heard anything about the blood clotting, etc., is when my dad died, my younger brother found him lying on his side like he was trying to get up out of bed. It was about 8 a.m. The mortician said they believe he died before midnight because of the pooling of blood on one side of his face, but it was put that he died the day my brother found him.

I'm not exactly the person to talk to about how lovely life is, etc. I've always been a pessimist, but if I'm going to die, I don't want to die of COVID. I've heard too many horrible stories and now I've heard the worst one so far. If I end up in the hospital, I don't want to be on a ventilator. Just let me die. This is just so bad there aren't words for it.

My father died of emphysema. He was on supplemental oxygen. He used to struggle to breathe. I don't ever want to feel like I'm not getting enough air.

I'm right there with you on that! Our front line workers in every aspect of this terrible pandemic are seeing things that no human should have to deal with.

I greatly wish I hadn't read the details. Ack.

I'm most terribly awfully squeamish, especially as nurses go.

The detail about the fluid on the face - this I did not know.

And the rest.

I think that countless COVID workers, in whatever aspect, will have a lifetime of trauma to deal with once they get a chance to step back and take a breath and wind down and then search for some peace.

Cold facts. Covid is not to play with. It tears families apart. People losing loved ones and people get chronically sick for life.

Here in Sweden, in the kommun of Jönköping, they have seen increased cases of Diabetes type 1 in small children. It stands out in the stats. There are some reasons to think that the virus triggered it. Googled it and there are news from the world about the virus possibly trigging the illness.

Get the jab!

I personally know 2 people with diabetes whose sugar was dangerously out of control in both directions for around 6 weeks after the moderna vaccine. I also know someone who had a stroke 3 days after the Johnson&Johnson.

Well, I know 5 people with diabetes whose sugar was dangerously out of control in both directions for around 6 weeks who never had the vaccine at all!

I also know unvaccinated people who had strokes 3 days after taking birth control!

This is why anecdotes are dangerous. There are actual processes to correlate data for accuracy. Don't be a Nicki Manaj. Anecdotes and Facebook chat are not research.

She had no bad side effects. The school she teaches in and her daughter also teaches in in the Twin Falls area closed from Tuesday through the weekend because of so many who were sick. My sister got tested and she is negative. Her daughter is sick.

Now that I've read about the ventilator, etc., I'll be first in line for the booster.

I and my wife got the Moderna. My wife experienced 3 or 4 days of feeling "under the weather" after the second dose. I had a terrible side effect after the first dose: my arm hurt a little! The second dose had no side effects for me.

Sure, be cautious, stay under the supervision of a doctor, but please get vaccinated, people.

cl2 not logged in: I am surprised, maybe it happens and we don't hear about it, but so many covid patients seem to wind up on ventilators and die. I've seen TV interviews where the doctors and nurses acknowledge the ventilator is the preparatory step to dying.

Doesn't anyone think like you and say, "no. no ventilator," just let me go?

My grandpa died from Covid and had requested not to be put on a ventilator.

A friend who used to post here, her brother was on the ventilator for a week or two and he survived. He's in his 50s or 60s. You never know, but after reading that embalmer's story, I do not want to be put on a ventilator.

I know plenty of people who live by me who got hit by COVID in the first year and none ended up in the hospital. The more I think about it, I know of a lot of people who had it the first year and they did okay. My younger sister had it in May 2021 and she's fine. She's had some breathing issues, but she got the first shot of vaccination today. She works for the IRS and has to get it even if she already had it.

Parents who've focused on protecting their children from accidents & sickness are now cavalier about covid infecting their
children bc some politician doesn't want to deal with it realistically.

this is beyond understanding, that's for sure.

Covid is survivable. I know first hand as it was a mild cold. Not everyone is so lucky or has awesome immunity system.

What hasn't happened is a repeat to the 600k deaths.

That won't repeat because of many things. Some Doctors know how to treat it. Vaccines have possibly made symptoms not so bad. 40% of the population already had covid and survived.

More than 677,037 Americans have died from COVID.* That's more than the 666,441** American combat deaths in all American wars combined. Was World War Two "fear porn?" World War One? The Civil War?

Your position on this is beyond absurd.

"Plummeting?" That's an exaggeration, isn't it? The seven-day average number of new cases fell sharply over the last 48 hours, but is that the new normal?

Meanwhile deaths in Florida was rising through the 10th of September and has in the last two days fallen from 350 deaths to 257.*** There have been comparable downturns in the past, most recently from the 3rd to the 4th of September, that immediately reversed as infection and death rates surged. So it's premature to speak of any sustained downturn in Florida let alone "plummeting" rates.

I append my sources below. I acknowledge, however, that the likelihood of your actually looking at them are exiguous.

More's the pity. . .

some of those listed as 'recovered' are going to suffer long-term outcomes, we have a name for them.

We can thank Fearless Leader DJT for the U.S. strategy - tactics for dealing with Covid, his sheeple continue to minimize its effects wanting to be politically visible if not Front & Center in the public eye....

this is a Shame to anyone who seeks or publishes non-scientific views or 'information', they're the modern snake-charmers.

Keep drinking that sheep drench...

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/another-warning-from-1918-spanish-flu-for-covid-19-survival-does-not-mean-that-individuals-fully-recovered-2020-08-18

There is a cautionary note from the 1918 flu that has resonance in 2020, and it could reinvigorate social-distancing and mask-wearing behavior among those people who are feeling the fatigue of disruption to their daily lives: “While 1918 was deadly, most that contracted the virus survived. But survival does not mean that individuals fully recovered.”

That’s according to a review of literature and studies on the 1918 flu by economists at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “The evidence suggests that, in 1918, those that survived the initial infection faced an elevated mortality risk and some physiological conditions never fully healed.”

“The first lesson from 1918 is that the health effects were large and diffuse. We may never know the true mortality consequences of 1918 because of incomplete or inaccurate record keeping, issues that also undermine our ability to quantify the impact of COVID-19,” they wrote. “The range of lingering health effects for those that contract COVID-19 and survive remains to be seen.”

The 2020 coronavirus and 1918 influenza are two highly contagious respiratory diseases that spread around the world in months. For the 1918 flu, healthier, younger people were most at risk. In 2020, it’s older people with preexisting conditions. But even fit people have had problems long after they’ve developed the antibodies to the virus.

SARS-CoV-1 in 2003 may provide more clues to what some patients can expect in 2020. This two-year study in the journal Respirology of a selected population published in 2010 of SARS survivors “showed significant impairment” of diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide or lung function, exercise capacity and health status with a more significant adverse impact for health-care workers.

A review of cases published last March in the medical journal JAMA Cardiology concluded: “Coronavirus disease 2019 is associated with a high inflammatory burden that can induce vascular inflammation, myocarditis, and cardiac arrhythmias.” It added, “Cardiovascular risk factors and conditions should be judiciously controlled per evidence-based guidelines.”

COVID-19 may induce new cardiac issues and/or exacerbate underlying ones, the researchers said. “During most influenza epidemics, more patients die of cardiovascular causes than pneumonia-influenza causes. Given the high inflammatory burden of COVID-19, and based on early clinical reports, significant cardiovascular complications with COVID-19 infection are expected.”
