Is The Hartford insurance group affiliated with the church?

Hartford is the insurer for BSA.

https://apnews.com/article/business-sexual-abuse-dover-boy-scouts-of-america-52cd5306ba5fffb4c622e91b752d5954

"One of the primary insurers of the Boy Scouts of America announced Tuesday that it has reached a tentative settlement agreement with the organization and with attorneys representing tens of thousands of men who say they were molested decades ago by scoutmasters and others.

Under the agreement, insurance company The Hartford will pay $787 million into a fund to be established for the men, the company said in a news release. In exchange for the payment, the Boy Scouts organization and its local councils have agreed to release The Hartford from further liability regarding sexual abuse claims.

Under a separate settlement, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has agreed to pay $250 million into the fund for abuse claimants, said church spokesman Eric Hawkins. The denomination, commonly known as the Mormon church, was the largest single sponsor of Boy Scout troops before ending its partnership with the BSA at the beginning of last year."

No, the Hartford is likely the general liability / commercial insurer for the church.

I believe the church is self-insured. I wonder if the payment came directly from tithing, or did they baptize and repent the tithing first?

The Hartford has no connection with the church, other than the possibility that the church might own stock in The Hartford...said stock, trading around $70/share, went up .40 cents today.

Wasn't Sam Young excommunicated for trying to stop potential sex abuse in the church? It only cost them $250M not to listen.

That's it?

75 plus years of abuse and that's it?

They got off cheap.

That's a mere 1/4 of one percent of their publicly known non real estate assets.

Unbelievable.

Of course we know immense pressure, threats and extortion was used to keep families from filing.

Unless of course it is your family putting the pressure on you to keep quiet.

What I hate about this, and about broader legal structures, is the unfairness of the outcomes.

The BSA and the LDS church ruined countless lives, those of the victims themselves as well as those of the family members and descendants who had to deal with the residual traumas. If that level of destruction had been wrought by a thug with a gun, she would have been sentenced to a long jail sentence. But because the perpetrators here are institutions and leaders of institutions, the ultimate settlement is not penal but monetary and the amount of money isn't even very impressive.

The same is true of criminal conduct. How many lives, how many families, were ruined by the collapse of Enron or the affairs of Bernie Madow or the implosion of the subprime mortgage market? And yet we see very few people go to jail and very limited financial penalties. Consider also the opioid crisis. The Sackler family made a fortune touting as harmless drugs that were in fact profoundly dangerous yet were allowed to keep most of their gains and nary a one saw the inside of a jail. Any bets on whether the Metropolitan Museum in NYC is going to change the name of the Sackler Wing?

It would be better if the penalties for crimes were based more on the effect on the victims than the status of the malefactors. Sentencing a bank robber to 20 years and the Sacklers to zero time and a modest (relative to their crimson gains) fine; or the BSA and the LDS church to such paltry sums is a travesty.

Agreed. The amount here amounts to a slap on the wrist. It would be laughable if it were not so tragic. The victims suffered, and were perhaps even further victimized by TSCC (if they tried to report it). TSCC is too cheap and lazy to actually conduct background checks, and too obtuse to take allegations seriously, and that negligence caused people serious harm. The penalty should inflict some pain on TSCC (IMO).

And some pain on the church officials who made decisions, like the coverups, that exposed additional kids to abuse. Until humans bear responsibility for the crimes they oversee through their organizations, there will never be accountability or a compelling incentive for those organizations to change their behavior.

My guess is that settlements like this are loaded with indemnity and hold-harmless clauses for the Morg and it's henchmen. I wonder if the individual perpetrators are separately liable.

I'm sure TSCC and it's "leaders" are off the hook with this sort of settlement, but I wonder about the individual abusers.

That's a great question. My guess is yes, since the purpose of the settlements is to shut down embarrassing civil cases.

“The Boy Scouts are offering abuse survivors a fraction of what their cases are worth and the assets available to pay them,” Pfau added. “The Mormon church is reported to have roughly $100 billion in assets, but it is offering a paltry $250 million to compensate the thousands of abuse survivors who were abused in Mormon Boy Scout troops by Mormon Scout leaders.”

LDSInc does NOT have $100 Billion in assets folks. That is ONE account, a slush fund. Pure cash. I am sure there are other investment accounts as well and that doesn't touch on all the real estate holdings. The $100 Billion is just the Monopoly money they play with.

It's not even a slap on the wrist. It is a slap in the face to the victims.

The BSA was THROWN UNDER THE BUS by TMC (the Mormon 'church'), and not only that, it was then run over completely, time and again, through manipulation and coercion, bending and breaking the rules, and breaking is back [LGTBSA+++], and bank, so it couldn't survive intact...

The BSA should sue TMC.

The BSA had to sell 3 large Puget Sound BSA properties boy scouts had used for years (and were a lot cheaper when they were purchased/ aquired) because area (all) MORMONS PULLED THEIR BIYS OUT of the BSA, and they didn't have the thousands needed for taxes and maintainable.
