Why would I be glad the Morg prohibited tattoos?

I have a rope around my left wrist to remind me I was a deckhand, I've had shipmates with pigs and roosters tattooed on the feet to prevent drowning (old nautical superstition; it's believed that if a sailor has a pig tattooed on one foot and a rooster tattooed on the other, it would prevent the sailor from drowning), I'm saving up for a memorial tattoo on behalf of my sister, and catnip has a lovely story about her tattoo and bells in Venice.

Our lives and bodies are stories. Why give someone grief for having their story/body illustrated?

At the height of your Mormonism, what would you have gotten as your Mormon tattoo?

Anyways, what’s cool is you can still go back and tell that part of your life story in the form of a tattoo(s). Now that you’re free to do it - go for it! If you can get back into your mindset as a true Mormon and pick a symbol that tells that part of your life story . . .

The words "Kiss This" tattooed on my butt. Could work now, too.

Um, "Mormons prohibited it" is not the reason:

I don't have tattoos.
I don't smoke.
I don't practice polygamy.

Will you share your reason for not having tattoos? Not smoking or practicing polygamy have obvious reasons. Just curious.

I have buyer’s remorse when I get a new t-shirt home. Besides, at my age, getting inked is like slapping paint on dry rot. I predict tattoo mania will ebb in the next ten years leaving millions with the stained skin equivalent of bell bottoms they can’t take off. And their children wondering what were they thinking?

I am proud of my ink, I stand behind my choices- my artist, the images...everytime I glance at my tattoos I am reminded that my body and my life are my own.

You go Aaron!

I would have several if I wasn't a cheap chicken!

I think they are so interesting to see on other people.

My daughter says I need a visible one because I still look like church lady. Haha maybe some day.

You are saying so you didn't get some mormon themed tattoos? Yeah, I guess, but tattoos still are not something that appeals to me even today. A CTR tramp stamp on your significant other would be a turn off, for sure.

Ugh. So grateful. It would have been awful. I can at least burn my garments and sell my books. An obnoxious tattoo of Joseph Smith on my bicep or a huge SLC temple on my back with "Families can be together forever"? Who knows what bad choices I might have decided to imprint on my skin forever if tattoos had been allowed in the church.

I have no interest in tattoos since leaving but I think that is partly the culture I grew up in, that I prefer my skin clear and don't really value ink art or permanent displays of personality and interest like that. But if growing up, Mormon culture was fine with tattoos and people readily displayed them, not only would there definitely be people who have LDS cult stuff tattooed on them like other Christians tattoo Christ and crosses. But also, my seeing that on people would have definitely affected my opinion of tattoos at a young age and I might think it worthy of commemorating my faith onto my skin in some way.

And now that I know it's all a lie, it would feel like I'd have that mistake with me in a way that others can see and get the wrong idea. At least when I meet new people, they don't assume I'm a devout Mormon or a Christian and I don't have to correct any assumptions based on a CTR tattoo or a BoM quote etched into my skin.

But the tattoo should come and go with it.

I remember three guys pretty well, they were my father's friends, none of them were ever called to leadership positions. I remember asking my dad about his friend's tatoo and my dad said it was a big mistake caused by drinking with dangerous women in the Philipines. His friend was however a scoutmaster, so I guess not completely 3rd class.

My FIL had about 4 tattoos that he had gotten in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. My MIL remained sufficiently disgruntled about it, but my FIL had numerous leadership positions. When he passed away from cancer at only 56, he was serving in the stake presidency.

I can't say that I'm 100% behind tattoos, I just don't see what the harm is unless you're getting tattooed under duress, or something. Some tattoos make a personal statement to the person, and it's not up to us to diminish that personal statement.

This is my 50th year of marriage, and also the most difficult, since it's also the 50th year of carrying burdens that have become every more difficult. I'm almost 72, and by now consider the burden mostly my own fault, since, in these 50 years, I was never successful in casting it off along the way. Since I seem unable to shake this, I was thinking of a tattoo way up my upper arm or back of shoulder, places that only I would see, more or less, that repeats the line from Earnest Dowson, "They are not long, the days of wine and roses." Would it help? Don't know. But that's the kind of thing that I can't blame others for, like photo-realistic tattoos of a dead child or spouse, etc. I just don't see the harm in most tattoos.

This thing about Mormon parents feeling scandalized because a child has gotten a tattoo or piercing doesn't affect only the rank-and-file members. One has to remember that there are church leaders out there who are similarly scandalized by their children, too, for one thing or another. And, on the other hand, there are even the more liberal church leaders who are not so easily scandalized, like the mission president whom I used to deal with who promised his very pretty and somewhat petulant daughter that she could get a navel piercing as a 16th birthday present. That scandalized many local members (the matter was not very private), but the president and his wife were good with it.

I think the church would have been tickled to death if a gazillion men and young women had BYU tattooed on their arms and hands. I bet it would make Holland tear up over the pride for his alma mater.

From CTR to temples to all their stupid GC themes "Doubt your doubts, Stay in the Boat" the top leaders would love to see their names flaunted everywhere. It would do a lot to boost their fragile egos.

in the military. When he found out they were allowing people to go to the temple who had tattoos, he was furious as they made his friends get the tattoos removed.

My son's old boss lady, she considers herself good mormon. When he told me she got 4 tattoos--and they aren't small--I told him for all her preaching, that shocks me. It says something to me about her wanting to rebel against mormonism, that she obviously has issues with it.

Myself, I'm too old to get tattoos. They'd sag or get all stretched out.

When I was a kid tattoos were only for those considered "low-lifes" and enlisted men--who rarely got the respect they deserved.

I have worked for the last 30 years with guys who were heavily tattoo'ed. So all I got to say, is really consider carefully the tattoo you want. Many people keloid something fierce when they try to get one removed.

I saw the word "Coors" tatto'ed across one guy's stomach. He also had people making love on his back--luckily it looked more like a romance novel cover than porn. I saw one with a guy mowing the lawn right above this guy's pubic thatch. Another the playboy bunny smoking a joint on a bicep.

Something about tattoos just doesn't work with an evening gown, and, I 'm talking about the women as well as the men. Well. Since so many are "fluid" now . . . something to think about. Right?

Don't drink and tattoo! Make sure the tattoo artist knows spelling and punctuation. And a lot of tattoo artist's just ain't that good.

You can get custom tattoos made as stick-ons that last quite a while. Try that and decide if you want it the rest of your life.

I was enticed by the sin of it. Lots of truly beautiful art. Till I saw (and smelled) my first fresh one. Then I was all in on getting my belly button pierced. Until I saw how it was actually done.

I will stick with henna or stick ons thanks :)

Not a big fan, some are alright and the light pastel colored newer prints nearly seem like an interesting compromise.

I've got my tattoos, stitches and cuts with scars and burns and surgery too.. plenty, so not very interested in more just for the sake of maybe more.

They never interested me, and my Hot Man doesn't have any, either.

I, on the other hand, have street maps of several larger European cities tattooed on my legs.

Sorry, I didn't originate that joke. Robert Klein said it on HBO a few years back.

Besides, as I've aged and lost weight, any attractive tattoo by now would become unrecognizable as an artistic design. But it would match my spider veins!

Vey creative thinking IMHO

I don't drink because alcohol tastes bad, and I don't get tattoos because they hurt. I didn't need the church to tell me to avoid hitting my head with a hammer.

I don't get the art thing - I can hang a painting on a wall. There are also ways to remember someone, like displaying photos, or wearing certain jewelry.

I just googled tattoos and pain, and read this, sounds like fun:

https://www.healthline.com/health/body-modification/pain-tattoos-chart#minimizing-pain

The way you experience pain and the placement of your tattoo can greatly affect how it feels to get inked.

Again, this hasn’t been proven scientifically, but certain types of pain are well-known in the tattoo community.

There are a few general sensations commonly felt when getting a tattoo. Being familiar with these sensations before getting tattooed can give you an idea of what you can expect to feel and how to tell when your pain isn’t normal.

Common types of tattoo pain include:

Burning pain
Burning pain feels like having something very hot pressed against your skin for an extended period.

It’s most commonly felt in areas a tattoo artist has worked on for a long time, caused by a combination of your skin’s rawness and the repeated trauma resulting from a tattoo needle piercing your skin in the same place. It’s also common in areas with more fat beneath the skin.

Burning pain isn’t usually intense, but it can be very irritating.

Dull or background pain
Tattoo artists say this is the best kind of pain you could feel while getting tattooed.

When the needle revs up with its loud buzz and the needle’s sharp prick first hits your skin, your body’s reaction is to start producing stress hormones like adrenaline. These hormones actually work to numb the pain into feeling like a dull ache in the background.

During your tattoo session, you may feel this dull pain change or intensify at times. You’re more likely to stay in the dull pain phase if you’re distracted by another activity while being tattooed, such as talking to your artist, listening to music, or watching TV.

Scratching pain
Scratching pain is the most common sensation experienced when you’re getting a tattoo. This kind of pain can feel like an intense scratch moving across the tattooed area, as if a cat were dragging its claws across your skin.

While this pain isn’t usually intense, it can hurt a lot if your tattoo artist works on the same area for a long time. It also tends to hurt more when multiple needles are used at the same time, rather than a single needle. This is the case when your artist adds shading to your tattoo.

Sharp or stinging pain
Sharp or stinging pain can be described as many tiny bee stings. This kind of pain is usually quite intense, and it feels like the needle is poking deep into your skin. It’s sometimes enough to make you want to move away from the tattoo needle!

This kind of pain is most commonly felt when a tattoo artist is using fewer needles, or just one needle, to add very fine detail or make the outline of your tattoo. Body parts with thinner or tighter skin are more likely to feel sharp or stinging pain, like the wrists and biceps.

While experienced tattoo artists know what they’re doing, it’s possible for newbies to mess up a new tattoo. Sharp or stinging pain that’s very intense might actually mean your tattoo artist is pushing their needles too deeply into your skin.

This can cause a tattoo deformity called a tattoo blowout, which leads to a tattoo’s ink dispersing below just the very top layers of skin that should be tattooed. The end result is a very painful and blurry tattoo.

You can prevent tattoo blowout by using a highly experienced tattoo artist and avoiding tattooing on very thin skin.

Vibrating pain
You may experience vibrating pain when you’re getting tattooed in a very bony place, such as these areas:

outer wrist
elbows
ribs
ankles
When a tattoo needle pierces skin above bone, nerves in your bones may pick up the vibrating sensation, especially if the needle is moving at a very high speed. This causes vibrating pain.

Vibrating pain isn’t usually intense, but it doesn’t exactly tickle either. You’re more likely to experience vibrating pain if you’re thinner and have less skin and fat over your bones.

How to minimize pain
Here are a few tips to minimize tattoo pain:

Ask your tattoo artist to take breaks when you’re having trouble dealing with the pain.
Choose a very experienced tattoo artist. Insist on seeing their certification and checking out their equipment beforehand. Your tattoo artist should always wear clean gloves and use sterilized equipment.
Don’t eat before you get your tattoo if you’re getting your stomach tattooed.
Follow tattoo aftercare instructions such as washing your tattoo, wearing loose clothing over your tattoo, and applying ointment and moisturizer to reduce pain and the risks of complications after your tattoo is finished.
Make sure you’ve gotten enough sleep before your tattoo. Having had sufficient sleep before a tattoo will make it easier for you to endure the pain.
Stay sober for your tattoo. Alcohol thins your blood and can cause bleeding and bruising. This can bring on a lot of pain and even ruin your tattoo.
Stay hydrated to keep your skin supple and tight to reduce the pain of a tattoo.
Try a numbing product on your skin before getting your tattoo to reduce the amount of pain you experience. Browse numbing products for tattoos online.

Never been a fan of tattoos, and I don't believe it has anything to do with church. I have tons of non-Mormon friends who dislike tattoos as well. But then experiences with my ex-wife have soured me even more. She developed a sudden interest in tattoos and smoking, and started spending money we didn't have on satisfying those desires. I travel for work, and there were a few times I were I suddenly found myself unable to buy food because my debit card wouldn't work. I would get home, only to find that my kids had been going around the neighborhood asking for food because we were "too poor to buy groceries", yet my ex had been drunk for several days and was sporting a new tattoo. One time we took a family trip to Florida to visit some of her family, and we were on a relatively tight budget for the trip. Then one night she went out with her brother and his friend, was out all night, and came back at 10 the next morning, having spend all of our trip money on getting a crotch tattoo. I was left having to call and beg my parents to loan us some money so we had gas money for the trip home. (Interestingly, the instant we split up, my financial situation drastically improved. Even though I got laid off from my job four months after filing for divorce, and even though I had full custody of the kids. With just collecting unemployment, I was able to pay the bills and still have a little bit of money to put in savings each month. Makes me wonder what else she was spending money on since we couldn't bang two nickels together despite making four times as much as I was collecting on unemployment). So yeah, now the thought of tattoos give me PTSD. That was 15 years ago, and it still burns me up. I don't think I could ever see myself having a partner who has tattoos, not even a small one.

I'm sorry to hear this story. Marriage is giving hostages to fate, particularly if you have children, because then you can't just cut and run. So people sometimes stay longer than they should and bear onerous consequences.

It sounds like that's what happened to you. I'm glad things have taken a turn for the better and hope your children are thriving too.

"As an ExMormon, aren’t you glad the church prohibited tattoos?"

Nope. Oh, I have no use for them personally, don't have a single tat, and likely never will. But if others want to express themselves that way, more power to them. Any guilt tripping toad can kindly kiss off, be it from TSCC, or anyone else. :p
