I was amused that Walter White's car in "Breaking Bad" was the Aztek (sic/sick). He kept crashing it, getting it shot up, etc. and for all his money he would always have it repaired to avoid the conspicuous consumption of a flashy car. So much for money buying happiness, or a snazzy car for that matter.

The Aztek's twin, the Buick Rendezvous, got better press and a longer production run. Some people are revising their opinions of the Aztek, saying it was just ahead of its time. They have a point when you look at the AWD high roof, high clearance stubby rear SUVs of today.

And yet Mormons are still required by their theology to believe that Columbus and those who came after were drawn by God. It is essential to their claim to divine dispensation. If Columbus was not inspired then neither was Joseph Smith. Am I right?

More likely that if Columbus was not inspired then the Americas and the nations that fill it are just another "drop in the bucket" and not "special" to God.

But per Mormonism, the LDS church is the ultimate expression of that providence of God.

I think that for everyone to be happy they should choose some other day for ingenious day. How about October 15 instead? Columbus was a great guy and the colonizers were welcome everywhere they went as far as I remember. The indigenous joined the Spaniards on the way to Mexico city, Cortez was almost a God.

The goal isn't for "everyone to be happy." The goal is to get the history right, which you do not.

You don't need a day to celebrate since ignorance is already bliss.

The "indigenous" didn't join anything or anyone.

Displacing, erasing, killing, taking advantage of... is not "joining".

Maybe you should celebrate on the bus to Columbus.

All true, when Columbus didn't find gold, he captured islanders that were sold in slave markets in Seville. Though some islanders went consenting. On his 4th voyage, he was denied entry to port in present day D.R. [ he was returned to Spain in chains on his 3rd voyage] That summer,in port, about to sail for Spain, were 30 some ships,Columbus warned the authorities there that a huge storm [hurricane] out there. They laughed at him and set sail [half the ships were lost] Which brings me to my point. Say what you will about Columbus, but the man was a master navigator & mariner with just compass and stars. And any sailors here [mine is a csy 37 sloop] will readily admit it. on an open ocean passage [with gps] you can't help but marvel at the accomplishments of these ancient mariners, the real one's, not the submarines that were "tight like unto a dish"

History is written by the victors. Christopher Columbus was the Adolph Hitler who won the war.
