In December 2005 we celebrated the birth of Joseph Smith’s 200th birthday at the expense of Jesus birthday. This was probably one of the biggest mistakes Gordon B Hinkley made during his tenure as Prophet, because this led to a lot of members to question the church and its focus of Joseph over Jesus. Then he topped it in December 2007 when Joseph’s birthday fell on Sunday the 23rd. Services focused almost exclusively on Joseph with hardly a mention of Jesus. So many people came to this board in December and January for both years.
In January of 2006 I came to this board because I was so bothered by the worship of Joseph. That is when I learned about
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xciCRq-bqxU Grant Palmer’s An insider’s view of Mormonism. The next required reading was Carl Sagan’s The Demon-Haunted World. From there the flood gates opened and I read and studied everything I could about church history.
I’m safely away from church and the anger and bitterness have disappeared. I rarely think about the church. Those members of my family that still go to church have all stopped trying to bring me back. The peace and happiness I have since leaving the church validate my decision.
I hope this Smithmas season becomes another successful year bring many people to this and other boards.
