I just got back from Australia. I was there to look at business opportunities and was warned before about Aussies’ “cowboy spirit.” A New Yorker told me to get everything in writing with them because they have a reputation for being aggressive.

I saw a little bit of what he was talking about…

But on my return to America and reading the news I am reminded of the British.

The British sent the criminals to Australia and the religious nutters here.

All the people saying “it happened so long ago…” look pretty doll now.

I think you’re right.

He may be right except for the word sent in relation to the religious.

Well, I was examining an American colonial era portrait this past week. The notes said that the subject of the portrait had been transported to the colonies for a crime in England. So it appears that it happened to a lesser extent in America as well.

But yeah, for the most part, we got the religious nutters. *sigh* Also, we got the people who thought that their staffing problems were best solved by slavery.

Australians are currently mass protesting against the overturning of Roe v Wade

We did the same in the UK, although I’m uncertain it was in such large numbers. If there is such a thing as Australian aggression, right now I see that as a good thing. The British stereotype of being “polite” isn’t necessarily preferable, just IMO.

That's really lovely. It's nice to have the support. The leaders of Canada, England, and France also spoke on behalf of American women -- probably other leaders as well. I think that our whack-a-doodle religious fascists need to be told that other first world countries think their actions are dreadful.

If you would trouble to learn history you would know that transportation of convicts to Australia only began due to the overloading of British prisons due to the loss of the American colonies which were formerly used as a convict dumping ground .

Unapologetic snark from the only “ colony” which didn’t have a convict beginning!!!!

I didn't know that, and do not recall it being taught in the U.S. history classes that I took over the years. This *should* be taught.

I certainly knew it. The Mormon side of my family were Irish/English/Scottish and had been in Georgia since at least the mid-1700s. I don’t really know how my ancestors ended up in Georgia, but knowing the history, and their last names, I can guess.

Georgia, in particular, received a lot of English convicts. They were supposed to serve as cheap labor.

True, my earliest known ancestor was one of many transported from Scotland to America on the "Henry and Francis" in 1685. His crime? Attending an illegal religious conventicle. One hundred and sixty four years later some of his descendants settled in Australia's only colony which didn't have a convict beginning.

I'm trying to think of a reasonable response to this post, but unfortunately I don't think there is one...

FYI- You know why Saskatchewan has rats and Alberta has mormons? Sakatchewan had first choice. Just saying.
