I've yet to understand why anyone would care about preventing the marriage of two consenting people who love each other?! Wouldn't that be part of his work responsibilities? It seems mean spiriited. If you're uncomfortable with homosexuality, probably don't have a relationship with a person of the same sex.

Because some people see marriage as religious and not just a legal act. They think if they support it they are accountable and viewed as a sinner before God.

This whole mess could have been avoided if the legal part of marriage is called a civil union.

And until very recently in human history, marriage was a contractual, arranged process between families for the preservation and maintenance of wealth.

Love had nothing to do with it, and God didn't either.

Because people want their government to recognize their marriages to God.

Hey, the guy wants his name on a supreme court decision allowing individual government employees the "freedom" to impose his religion on others.

He may succeed!

I have no problem with whatever this person believes. I do have a problem with him wanting the job of issuing legal licenses. If he doesn't want to issue them to everyone who qualifies, don't apply for the job. It's that simple.

So if they go to the next county over and get a license and get married in UT Co, and send their paperwork into the neighboring county, they'd still be legally married, right?

If the really thinks Marriage is a religious thing - why doesn't the Church handle divorces rather than the courts?
