Do they care about living, breathing children? NO!

But if you're in Georgia, you can get a tax cut for the unborn...

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/02/georgia-embyros-tax-dependents-fetus

Georgia taxpayers can now list embryos as dependents on their tax returns.

In a news release on Monday, Georgia’s department of revenue said it would begin to “recognize any unborn child with a detectable human heartbeat … as eligible for [an] individual income tax dependent exemption”.

Officials added that taxpayers filing returns from 20 July onward can claim a deduction of up to $3,000 for any fetus whose heartbeat could be detected. That “may occur as early as six weeks’ gestation”, before most women even know they are pregnant, the statement said.

Taxpayers must be ready to provide “relevant medical records or other supporting documentation … if requested by the [revenue] department”.

Legal analysts and advocates for abortion rights greeted the announcement with dismay and skepticism.

Anthony Michael Kreis, a Georgia State University law professor and political scientist, tweeted that some pregnancies detected within six weeks of gestation “result in natural miscarriages”, which could leave the Georgia’s treasury “handing out a lot of cash for pregnancies that would never come to term”.

Someone is going to distribute a paperwork form to use to claim the $3,000 deduction for a tax year, followed, at the end of the calendar year, with paperwork covering the miscarriage, so every other year. a $3,000 deduction!

And maybe every year for those pushing the edge of the envelope!

They should try to keep their terminology straight: Generally, a developing pregnancy is referred to as an embryo until 8 weeks of gestation. It becomes a fetus after 8 weeks until birth.

I know I'm picky but, also, if "most women" don't know they're pregnant at six weeks, why is anybody listening for a "fetal" heartbeat?

Besides the handing out cash issue, as has been discussed here previously would you want to inform the govt that you are pregnant at six weeks because how are you going to explain a spontaneous miscarriage to those who are seemingly intent on seeking out and punishing women for pregnancy outcomes the witch-hunters disapprove of? Many, many early pregnancies end in spontaneous miscarriages (also referred to as spontaneous abortions but who wants to use the A word these days?).

How can you prove the mechanism of the end of pregnancy though, the way things are going at the moment in some states?

It's enough to put women off sex altogether. See how the most raucous of the "protecting life" male politicians like that!

I think the men will be fine until the Republicans ban contraception.

I'd listen...cuz I was curious.

Marriage...!!  THAT'S what puts women off sex altogether!

You raise some good points. I think the Georgia legislature may eventually want to rethink that one.

Georgia's the state that elected Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Correction: One of Georgia's districts elected Mrs. Taylor Greene. She does not represent the entire state in Congress (thankfully).

When born do they show the kid as 9 months old?

Might have an impact on School Sports later as well as age to Vote, etc.

In addition, a woman has two miscarriages in a calendar year - can she claim TWO exemptions for taxes?

Let's ask a mirror image of that question. If a woman is found to be carrying twins or triplets or quadruplets, can she get twice, three, and four times the tax break respectively, one for each child? Inquiring minds (though not bodies) want to know.

This whole thing is getting beyond ridiculous.

If it wasn't so tragic, the way they are going about making the rules is like something out of a Monty Python sketch.

The movement is an expression of rage. Destruction is the point.

It was always going to work out this way.
