Despite, or perhaps because of, the church's objections to the song "Physical,", it went on to spend 10 weeks at #1 in the U.S. and Billboard would list the song as the best-selling song for the year 1982 and, if memory serves, the biggest pop song of the 1980s.

It must have been devastating to those music execs to lose that lucrative and influential Utah market. /s

I split my time between California and Georgia in the early 80's, and she was popular in both places.

"Grease" was a box office smash in '78, and propelled her career.

My kids love Grease. A nearby drive-in usually runs it once a year, and we usually go. And a big amphitheater in our metro area used to do a sing-along version of it yearly (don't know about now with Covid).

I don't think TSCC was able to dampen her career much, if at all.

I doubt the church had any effect at all. No one knows about the religion, or cares, except for what must then have been about two million active members--and for half of the kids of that status, church opprobrium would have boosted sales.

Tempest in a thimble at best.

It may have had the opposite effect, just like the Catholic Legion of Decency in the 1970's: if they condemned a movie, then you knew it was a good one.
For a number of reasons, I didn't care much for "Grease"; but she was the best thing in it. Also saw her in concert in Laughlin, Nevada a few years ago, and enjoyed it very much.
RIP.

When the lights were off, I couldn't tell the difference between Olivia and Helen Reddy.  It made it awkward . . . but they were always good sports about it.

Olivia wanted to get physical. With Helen you didn't have to sleep with one eye open.

At the time Grease was released, I was living in Venezuela due to my then-husband's job. The marquee on the theater advertised "Vaselina" for Grease :)

Only about 364 days until her Temple Work can be done.
