Apparently, Mohammed lost a convert because he didn't recognize the changes in dictation of the Koran that the convert stealthily made.

With Salman Rushdie getting attacked today, I started reading about "Satanic Verses" again and Rushdie's references to this incident led the to Ayatollah of Iran to issue a death threat against him.

Here's the excerpt: "Other issues many Muslims have found offensive include Abraham being called a "bastard" for casting Hagar and Ishmael in the desert;[21] and a character named Salman the Persian who serves as one of the Prophet's scribes, an apparent reference to the story, controversial among Muslims, of a Meccan convert by the name of Ibn Abi Sarh, who left Islam after the Prophet failed to notice small changes he had made in the dictation of the Qur'an."

In the 19th century, journalists often called JS "the American Mohammed" and that was more accurate than many people realize.

Mohamed and Joseph Smith are apples and oranges. Islam spend by the sword. It was convert or else! American Mormonism was sold. It sold well when America was viewed as this magical place where anything was possible in both the American continent and Europe. Manifest destiny is the horse Mormonism rode in on and violence is what Islam rode in on. Mohamed would have eaten Joseph Smith for lunch. Joe was a master seller of illusions more than anything.

Spreading by the sword: the proper parallel is not between Islam and Mormonism but between Islam and Christianity. Both of the latter were spread by the sword. No one asked the peoples of Europe or the native Americans or the peoples of any other ultimately Christian lands if they wanted to embrace Jesus.

It's true that islam spread by the sword, and still does. But in matters of style and substance, of look and feel, of vibe and atmosphere, mormonism as a subculture is very muslimy: the "One True Faith" mentality, the us-against-the-world mentality, the science-is-trumped-by-religion mentality, the misogyny, homophobia and xenophobia, and so on and so forth.

Also, if Joseph and Brigham were never the warlords that Muhammad and Ali were, it wasn't for a lack of ambition.

This was something that I recalled and have pointed out before: Parley P. Pratt said, "Mormonism is closer to the Crescent than the Cross". He even praised Mohometanism (Mohammedism) because they practiced a form of the Word of Wisdom (as Mormons do no alcohol, fasting, no over indulgence) Practiced polygany and of course he favored the killing of infidels and blood atonement for apostates, Patriarchal Priesthood. --- He felt the U.S.A. would have been better and would of been better if it adopted Muslim creed and ways as opposed to Catholicism/Christianity of the present. JoD Vol 3 dis 7--if read, it will chill your bones. Remember, it was the killing of Parley P. Pratt that made the Mormons and John D. Lee feel justified for the Mountain Meadow Massacre since the Arkansas emigrants were bragging about killing P.Pratt; and they felt compelled to invoke the Temple "Oath of Vengeance" that was part of their temple covenants.

George A. Smith giving a history of Mohammedism to the members who knew nothing of "the orient" or Muslims.

Then again; An LDS member would say, "we never taught that, or ...they were speaking as men" GASLIGHTING on history, doctrine.

Two points.

First, BY also praised Islam. He said that that faith was closer to the true Abrahamic religion than the Christianity of the 19th century which, of course, he thought needed reform.

Second, the claims that the Fancher-Baker party boasted of killing PPP come only from Mormon sources who had an interest in justifying what had happened at MMM. There is no independent evidence on the point. Furthermore, give that a substantial majority of the people in the train were women and children--Bagley's book provides the actual numbers--it was hardly the rowdy bunch that the Mormons described.

Totally agree....the whole drunken, bawdry "campout" scenario never happened or was fact. It was just a way to oil up the narrative to give it a nicer sheen for members and historians. It's only now that we are hearing/reading some of the stories and memories of the few child survivors. e.g. kids seeing Mormon Women walking around town wearing their mother's dresses.
