"Pizza savers" are meant to keep the lid from hitting the toppings and thereby getting stuck to them. To quote Wikipedia:

If you have a very VIP Mormon leader like the profit, then it's proper and customary to offer the pizza table to him. An honor worthy of his presence. (Then you serve the actual pizza to everyone else).
