It's probable that in the year of our Lord 2022, only people 65 and older have first-hand knowledge of the potential for 'fun' the mormon church offered to its future leaders. I'm referring to growing up in the church in the 1950s & 1960s...and maybe into the early 1970s.

I'd like to know what happened that allowed those future leaders who grew up in that now-nonexistent church to turn their backs on what it was.

What did they, my TBM peers, buy into that I'm not aware of?

Was it all just "follow the prophet"?

If so, Rusty has allowed the creation of mormon Papal Fallibility; the current prophet has shown that alleged TBMs can get away with not believing everything he says.

And yes, who doesn't want to do the Five Points of Fellowship to a good beat, with a driving bass, all while slightly tipsy?

The OED puts a word in as soon as it appears in published form five times.

A lot of the people doing the dance are pretty "square" as it is so that might cover that aspect. My TBM dad was so square you could cut you finger it you touched a corner of his head.

There was a poster on PostMormon.org named Jelly Bean Studio, who I believe was a woman. Her signature line asked "What if the Hokey Pokey is what it's all about?" which I thought uniquely pointed to the meaning of life.

I realize now that she probably purloined the idea but continue to believe it refutes the religions and political ideologies that preoccupy our poor species and prevent us from focusing on what really matters.

I remember a fleeting thought I had when I was in a temple prayer circle for the first time. It reminded me of the hokey pokey.

I felt a little bad for having that thought in the temple, but hey, it fits.

Pre-1990, after which the Temple endowment was toned down somewhat, when I went through for the first time, ignorant to it all, when asked to pronounce YES out loud to what seemed to me as scary cult like/brain washing affirmation, I did in fact speak the word out loud, but at the same moment I made a point to recite in my mind, NO!
