AUSTIN, Texas — A Texas Republican wants to make foods containing material from aborted human fetuses “clearly and conspicuously labeled” — even though such products do not exist.

The proposed law, authored by state Sen. Bob Hall, says food and medicine would have to be labeled if it contained or was manufactured with human fetal tissue or if it was the product of research that used such tissue. The bill defines human fetal tissue as “tissue, cells, or organs obtained from an aborted unborn child.”

“Unfortunately, many Texans are unknowingly consuming products that either contain human fetal parts or were developed using human fetal parts,” read a statement from Hall’s office. “While some may not be bothered by this, there are many Texans with religious or moral beliefs that would oppose consumption or use of these products.”

The quality, sourcing and nutritional value of consumer foods is a long-standing concern of many Americans, with years of reporting and research showing the harms that lax regulation, dubious ingredients and careless cost-cutting can cause.

However, the notion that "fetal tissue" is being used as a flavor enhancer is absolutely unfounded, though it isn't new.

This claim goes back at least as far as 2011, tied to a dispute between Senomyx and pro-life group Children of God for Life, and has been the subject of multiple fact-checks since then.

Well, what do you think infant formula is made of? Plus you can go to the store and see hundreds of tiny jars with a picture of a baby on the label.

Maybe he's confusing it with fecal tissue. I'm sure we eat a lot of rodent and bug poop over the years in our processed foods.

You know, if having that particular law on the books makes them happy, then...okay. Arguing with stupid can be a waste of one's time.

How was this kept secret for so long? How many people had to be involved in this secret operation of putting literal human meat into food products? Have they found proof and tested it? It should be easy enough, right? Just go into the pantry now and send a can of whatever is suspect to a testing facility. Or does this conspiracy implicate testing facilities and the people who run them too? How large is the operation? Just Texas? Nationwide? International? Is the U.S. government complicit or organizing this? This already feels like a pretty obvious thing that would be illegal to do. Like, if someone did uncover a food production plant that was putting fetal matter in food, we wouldn't need a new law to be like, "hey, don't do that"? I feel like they'd already be in trouble and not just for omitting the information from the nutritional labels. So, it feels like a law he just made, "If you stab someone to death, you're going to get jail time." It's like, "yep. Murder in several definitions was already illegal, bud. We got it. Stabbing doesn't make it different or special."

How many people does he think are genuinely out there in the world who would not only be super chill about eating human but also so into eating humans that they wouldn't blow the lid right off of this thing as soon as they discovered it? Like, does he think an NDA would really combat that? If someone worked for a food production plant and discovered what they were adding to the recipe, does he genuinely believe that if that person was bothered by that, they'd simply quit and walk away like it was a job that simply didn't pay enough?

It's like the flat earthers all over again. They don't think how much people love to freaking share an awful secret. It would need to be such a tight operation... Then again, this was probably part of the classified files someone has taken home and we just haven't opened that closet yet.
