“The honest investigator must be prepared to follow wherever the search of truth may lead. Truth is often found in the most unexpected places. He must, with fearless and open mind insist that facts are far more important than any cherished, mistaken beliefs, no matter how unpleasant the facts or how delightful the beliefs.”

Yup, he believed evidence matters.

The Church has been very careful not to let another like him into the hierarchy, though I think they came close to messing up with Uchdorf.

Damn furriners.

It wasn't anti-Mormon at the time like many things when they were producing things called "Truth Restored" and such.

I don't know if he ever doubted much given he died in the mid 70s but I would like to think he would never say doubt your doubts given this quote.

He was wed to the church. I think his search for truth led him in the direction of the church.

Exactly. He was speaking during the heyday of Mormon self-confidence.

I think he sincerely believed, like many then and even now, that eventually science and research would vindicate Mormonism.

When verification of a fact relies on the burning in the bosom then that quote is not so anti-Mormon after all. Anything that comes from a prophet is a fact and anything to the contrary is just a "delightful belief". Just ask my family.
