The Salem Witch Trials ended three hundred and thirty years ago in 1693, but today, we have a new group of crazy ladies who use religious extremism and fear to enforce their will on others.

Much like the 1980s "Satanic Panic" or the 1950s McCarthy Era, the accusations don't have to be real.

All that is necessary is a climate of fear.

In reality, a book or a film cannot make a child gay or trans any more than a black cat or walking under a ladder can give you bad luck.

It's just an excuse for something you don't want to accept, so you blame it on something or someone else.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A poem written for President Joe Biden’s inauguration has been placed on a restricted list at a South Florida elementary school after one parent’s complaint.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, poet Amanda Gorman vowed to fight back. Her poem, “The Hill We Climb” was challenged by the parent of two students at Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes, along with several books.

“I’m gutted,” she wrote. “Robbing children of the chance to find their voices in literature is a violation of their right to free thought and free speech.”

Conservative parents have swarmed school board meetings in Texas and across the country in recent months to call for the removal of library books that deal with race, racism, sex, gender and sexuality. Some parents have taken it a step further, filling out paperwork to formally challenge the appropriateness of library books and forcing school administrators to review them.

Many on the political far right do indeed think that was a mistake that they intend to correct.

I do believe that their main objection is that the poet is Black.

In the Florida public schools, a parent can challenge any book and any teacher. The situation for teachers is very bad down there right now. I guess teachers are the modern-day "witches."

What makes the situation worse is that any book can be banned because of the objection of one person, even if the vast majority don't want it banned. That is not helpfull for either teaching or learning.
