Many thanks from way up here!

Hi Greyfort (my fellow Canuck).

I had to work. Wah.

I guess I'll catch some highlights of the day on the evening newscast. Somewhere, some time, some place, I know somebody was having FUN.

As they say, there's always next year - when hopefully I'll be out and about. I may hear fireworks celebrations tonight so that's something.

Did I neglect to mention Norwegian Constitution Day?

If I did, a reindeer will crap on my Birthday Cake :(

17th of May, Hurray for Syttende Mai!

Happy Canada Day, friends! I don't think we Americans quite deserve our lovely north-of-the-border neighbors. Enjoy!

Nightingale is COPA day tomorrow when Canada faces Argentine in the semifinal a challenge for Canada day? Must be the biggest football day for Canada. Can't remember Canada ever being on such a world stage for the beautiful game. Big day. England v Netherlands in the afternoon Canada v Argentina in the evening.

Our game was yesterday (9th), kentish. Final score 2-0.

Oh well, at least the sportswriters called our team "gutsy".

I'm predicting that you're watching England as we speak. Sounds like it's a great game.

Canada did very well by making the semis. England prevailed against the Netherlands. They will face Spain in the final on Sunday.

I've been watching the Copa America as well. Colombia vs. Uruguay was something of a slugfest. I don't think I've ever seen so many yellow cards drawn, and there was even a red card early on for a Colombian player who whacked a Uruguayan. It leaves me a bit concerned for the Argentina-Colombia final, also on Sunday.

It's still 'Dominion Day' to me. I hope Independence Day never gets changed to the cheesy America Day.

Just admit that Canadian bacon and ham are the same thing.

Not at all, David! (Calling you that because David and Dave are the same thing). :)

From Jones Dairy Farm:

"...Canadian bacon is a departure from traditional bacon slices. It is sometimes referred to as back bacon. Unlike the conventional bacon derived from the pig's fattier belly, Canadian bacon comes from the centre of the pig's back - the area housing the much leaner pork loin. Canadian bacon, which has an appearance and flavour more similar to ham, is typically cured then cooked during the smoking process. Canadian bacon comes from the back of the pig, the loin, which is very tender and lean. Ham comes from the leg of the pig, which is less lean than the loin. Canadian bacon is often used for breakfasts, brunch and lunch while ham is typically used for dinner meals."

1. If that description doesn't convert you to vegetarianism, nothing will.

2. While the above is a direct quote from their site I "corrected" their spelling to make it in line with Canadian English spelling. Couldn't resist.

Canadian bacon, like English bacon, actually has more meat than fat.

Does mormon bacon have more spirit?

Yes, that's what's nice about it, kentish. I don't care for the fat.

I'm moving closer to the vegetarian crowd lately though, to my surprise. We've always been a meat-and-potatoes kind of family.

There's something about stopping to visualize what it is you're actually eating and how it finds itself on your plate...

Yes, knowing "how the sausage is made" ruins everything. Ignorance is bliss.

But learning how humans are made was weirdly invigorating...

Yes, dagny. I stumbled over a chart not long ago that laid out the grim truth, with diagrams.

Diagrams can cause a great deal of trouble.

Fortunately, I live on fruit and veg through the summer and with the price of meat, even absent any random diagrams that crossed my path, meat is a definite luxury these days.

My vegetarian friend will be thrilled if the next time we go out for breakfast I don't put in my usual order for bacon and eggs. She still drools over bacon, saying it was the hardest thing for her to give up when she went veg. It was kind of mean of me to order it in front of her I must admit.

Don't each much bacon due to the difference but don't think too much about origins when I do. Sorry about Canada's loss in COPA but being in the semi says how far Canada's football has come. Pleased about England's win to advance to the EURO final for second time running. Maybe better luck this time around. It's due.

It's definitely due, Kentish. Exciting to think they could win the tourney.

Yes, it's a good showing for Canada. Maybe one of these days it'll be our turn.

"Is it pork roll or Taylor Ham?" ROFL

Sounds so funny. Not sure if it's meant to.

I can do without pork - something about the colour of it puts me off - but I do like a good ham sarnie once in a while.

No such thing as Taylor Ham :) It’s like hoagie vs. sub.

Lemme tell you…one of my best memories is sobering up at this place called Maynard’s in Margate, NJ at 2 am after a proper St. Patty’s pub crawl beginning at the Irish Pub in Atlantic City. I had a friggin’ magical cheeseburger with a slice of fried pork roll on it, and I can’t remember eating something more satisfying. Oddly, I ended up with a totally different group off people than those I started out with, and I’m not sure how that happened, but the cop that found us sleeping in my car listening to Houses of the Holy was cool and let us sleep it off. There’s a vibe you find in the off season that makes up for shoobee bs.

Irish pubs - so much fun - so much room for who knows what to happen.

Irish pub sing-a-longs got me through nursing school.

I suggest that all countries prohibit exporting donations ($ or other wealth) outside their boundaries.

U'd think developing countries would be first to make these transfers unlawful
