I was riding my bike on the trails near my home when I saw a former work colleague on a trail. We starting talking about a mutual friend who is struggling. I told Bob that I recently took a load of groceries to this friend who was too sick to get out. Now this is where the conversation gets a bit skewed.
Bob said he told the mutual friend that he should go to church. Bob was upset that his suggestion was rebuffed. I commented that the friend is an atheist. Bob repeated that religion is important. He said he does not believe everything in the Bible as there are obvious Hebrew mythologies interspersed particularly in the old testament.
My response was that I have studied the whole Bible in two languages. I met with theologians and scholars as I tried to find a belief in Christianity viable. In the end I became an atheist as well. My experience is that folks who just pick and choose what to believe in the Bible are Christians. Those who study intensely become atheists.
Bob then responded, ‘I worked with you for over 20 years and find you to be an ethical and moral individual. Your helping our friend is just an example.’
My response, ‘Bob, Even though you are a Christian I believe you are still a good person’.
We both laughed and I went on my way.
