Mormon's own David Miscavige and just as charming.

This cracked me up. When will the leaders stop this idol worship of the flesh? I guess there was a recent fireside where a bunch of kids stood during the closing song and Bednar stopped the song and lectured them about when it was appropriate to sit or stand and essentially said you follow the presiding officer (aka him). SMH... please, I hope you see through this for the charade that it is.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi9cmwi18Ww

A 5 stake conference held in the BYU fieldhouse, (not sure of the official name) Anyway, Elder Bednar asked the congregation to sing the closing hymn with "Gusto". So a group of young men decided to stand in the singing of the hymn, leading to many following their example of standing.

At some point Elder Bednar arose and called for the hymn singing to cease in the middle of the hymn, and then proceeded to chastise those in attendance, to wit, "if I'm standing - you stand, if I'm sitting - you sit." etc. etc.

I would go to a mtg headlining Bednar- for sole purpose of coming in late/standing,sitting at will, going out during his speaking, leaving early and coming back... any way to make a scene/tick him off

From the revised modern edition of Moroni 6
———
"And their meetings were conducted by the church after the manner of the workings of the Spirit, and by the power of the Holy Ghost; for as the power of the Holy Ghost led them whether to preach, or to exhort, or to pray, or to supplicate, or to sing... but not to stand, unless the presiding authority authorizes you to stand and then it is blessed by the Lord. In other words, stand when we stand, sit when we sit and all will be well, even so it was done."

Does that mean when Bedner leaves everyone leaves and doesn’t return because he didn’t?

Has Bednar heard of Christianity?

I Don't think so: he seems to think that his arrogance is a Better Substitute

The VERY BEST thing that ChurchCo does is to extract $$$$ from its members

The Second Best thing that ChurchCo does is to distract members away from the basic, core elements of Christ-like living, I count those as

Kindness, Honesty, Respect for others.

as exampled by: the parable of the Good Samaritan, the Golden Rule.

I wish I could be 1/1000th as good at what I need to do as they are....

One of my personal fantasies is to have an opportunity to attend an event that Bednar is speaking at and stand up and turn my back on him and just wait to see what happens. Wonder if someone would try to manhandle this here mid-60’s dude out of there?

April 6 2052-- The wheelchair bound 100 year old leader of the Mormon Church, David A.Bednar, now requires that all members of the congregation remain seated as he is wheeled from the building at the conclusion of the meeting.

Surely we were all brainwashed by singing "Do as I'm doing" enough times to realize what went wrong here. The perps in this story didn't sing this song enough times.

GAs' arrogance and shaming is hardly new but this takes it all
a few steps further. I have an experience from a time between
the 1960s and 1970s that illustrates this but I'll put it in a
separate topic.

early in my MoExperience, a GA told the story about how the 'Saints' in GB became disconnected from the mother ship during WW II bc of lack of GA visits/contacts with this story:

(paraphrase, it's been a long, long time~)

'In England, the deacons were required to wear formal wear for passing the sac.'

has anyone else heard this? Reminds me of Bedknobs!

Yeah, when I had the lugubrious Cleon Skousen as a professor. But he also told of how he was required as a youth to pass the sacrament, with deacons wearing black trousers, long-sleeved white shirts, matching ties, and (get this) white gloves, and left hand on the small of their backs. They had to line up military style at the back of the chapel. The boy who was tasked to go up on the stand walked to the steps, paused and did a military turn and approach the bishop. After the bishop ate his bread, then all the other deacons marched line-astern down the aisles, turned military style to face the first person in the row, and gave whomever the tray. He had to do a military about-face, then two-three steps to the end of the next aisle, and do a military right turn and take the tray when it was passed down the the end of the next row, and so on. When they each finished their row, they turned sharply marched back to their starting place, halted, and did an about-face, and stand at parade rest with both hands behind them on the small of their backs, stood at parade rest until the bishop got off his ass and went to the podium and thanked the deacons, telling them they could go back to their families.

What was Cleon's take on the military protocol for distribution of the sacrament? Was he criticizing whomever came up with it, or did it believe it was divinely inspired?

My question as well. I had a stake president who wanted everything his way. No bolo or cowboy style neckties. He also hated bow ties.

When I started as a 12 year old deacon, there were 9 or 10 priests. The stake president went after every one of them for morality charges. We ended up with 3 my last year as an 13 year old. The last hold out had long hair and his mom (a hair stylist) stood by the son.

Eventually this will disappear because the church is losing their youth. Bednar is getting away being his usual prick because it's BYU. Move outside of the Moridor and leaders will tell him that he has to be extra nice because it's getting harder for the church to amass 200+ youth in non LDS areas. And if he acts that way towards them, they will likely receive his angst in a non complimentary manner. Just my thoughts.

I remember something like this when I worked as a co-employee at the church years ago. ( They didn't like to hire people directly for some reason. )

We were "coached" before several of the apostles came in to a room we were all waiting. Forget which building in the plaza it was. Essentially they said the same thing.

It felt weird. I kept thinking something about this wasn't right. It wasn't just a respect thing. It felt like we were being intimidated. Do it or else type thing. Not a positive experience IMO.

Glad for the experience but I'll never go back there again.

What’s a co employee?
a contact employee?

Somewhere in that chain there’s a ‘real’ employer, W 2s, health & safety rules & regs, etc.

We were employees of a third party company however the checks came from the corporation of the presiding bishop. At least that was the name listed.

I could never figure that one out.

I had yearly meetings with the church hr. That might have been for the temple recommend garbage. Meetings with church staff for salary increases.

The term used was coemployee. Been a while since I thought of the experience. I think they just liked making things more complicated than necessary.

The hero worship of the gerontocracy was something I could never understand (even when a faithful member). Wouldn't people serving god be the most humble and most likely to eschew such self-serving notions? I used to look at the leaders as the Head-Butlers for God. Now that I am out, it is clear that they are a group of self-serving charlatans mimicking each others whispery sing-songy voice patterns.

I sometimes freak my family out by mimicking them and saying things like, "Isn't it wonderful? Isn't is marvelous? Gay sex is truly the presence of God in our lives." Thomas Monson really nailed the phony voice I think.

HH =)

Bednar is following prior examples of prior chosen GAs;

in Morland, style is more important than substance.

There's probably no exact date & time when this happened/took precedence, but it's certainly in effect now.

This happened about the same time as ChurchCo jettisoned Honesty, Kindness, and Respect for others into the dust bin.
