What Is a Cryptid?
According to Merriam-Webster, cryptids are animals or creatures that are claimed to exist but have never been scientifically verified. This means the term '"cryptid" can officially include anything from the Loch Ness Monster to that ghost that lives in the abandoned house around the corner.

From the BBC this morning. The search for Big Foot.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2ykyew50go

'Two men were found dead in a remote forest while searching for Sasquatch, also commonly known as Bigfoot, according to authorities in Washington State.

The two men from Portland, Oregon, were found dead after a three-day search was launched on Christmas Day after a family member reported that the pair had not returned from a trip to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to search for proof of the mythical hairy, forest-dwelling, bi-pedal primates.

The search involved over 60 volunteers searching with aircrafts and dogs in heavily wooded terrain and brutally-cold weather conditions, the Skamania County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

"Both deaths appear to be due to exposure, based on weather conditions and ill-preparedness," the statement said.'

Of course this brings us to Cureloms and Cumoms from the Book of Mormon. Out of curiosity this morning, while drinking a cup of coffee, I went to an apologist site that tells us this: 'Animals offer a unique perspective in the lives of the people around them. How we use and view animals—as well as what kinds there are—tell a story about the humans around them. The same is true for the animals found in the pages of the Book of Mormon. Through science and a scholarly study of this book of scripture, we learn much about these ancient peoples as we research the animals around them. .. These are possibilities for a curelom and cumom, but no one knows for sure. The scholarly research into the Book of Mormon provides an interesting perspective into the lives and cultures of these ancient peoples. Although science and scholars can answer some questions raised by the animals in the Book of Mormon, they cannot answer all of them. This is where the reader must rely on a spiritual witness that the book is true.'

Now I have a word stuck in my head - cryptid, to describe Cureloms and Cummons. Where I will ever use that word again - who knows?

I worry that a century from now a lot of the animals we have now will be listed as cryptids and long forgotten as they died out due to human selfishness fueled by religion as the excuse for all evil.

You reminded me how beautiful the animals we have are and that I'm not sure I would have figured out how to love with out my dogs. I got a late start and I blame Mormonism for some of that.

And as for curloms and cumoms, like unicorns and chupacabras, no one can prove cureloms and cumoms didn't exist. The art of the possible!

Chock one up for Joseph! I wonder if he actually made something up himself or where he copied that one from.

LOL, I thought that politics was the art of the possible :) Love that movie.

I do know about cryptids because I myself am strange and unusual. I know Mothman is real!

I was just listening to a fun fiction podcast, and they used that word. I had to look it up too.

I don't like that the word definition implies the possibility of things that are obviously bogus BS. This kind of thing sells well for movies, books, and entertainment. It's not exactly helpful when it comes to scientific literacy which is also being blurred.

Like D&D said, it blurs make believe imagined with actual species of things in a confusing way. That in turn encourages idiots like those guys in Washington.

Funny how people who discover legitimate new species of things tend to actually be prepared to be traipsing around in the wild.

People love to set up hoaxes that no one can prove are complete BS. Just ask JS.
