Most religions are full of arbitrary self imposed rules. It's part of the way the religion makes you pay to play.
Compliance is meant to make you accepted or not by the group.

It looks so tribal, controlling and unnecessary to me now.

Yes. For some reason, probably related to our being social animals, we really like to control the private behaviors of our fellow humans, and some of us never know when to stop.

I’d give up the religion first

Religion is just what other fallible humans tell you is true, or what they tell you to do. Why should I take direction from someone who is no better than I am?

I haven't seen the video. I just think it's beyond sad to forgo an interest, a talent or an experience for something that is so trivial.

The church was always after me to attend every single youth service project. They had two of them per month on Saturdays, plus a trip to the temple for dead dunking. And throw in Scouting and the church monopolized every weekend in the month.

And the church would guilt and gaslight those who had the gall to not show up. I was picked on for trying to spend a Saturday doing chores at my home, helping Dad repair his transmission or going with Mom to assist her with the errands.
