Almost.

They were walking in the street and made no effort to share the narrow lane where I was driving a car. I wasn't going more than 10 mph, but they never moved to the side. I stopped to prevent any type of collision.

And here's the oddity. All three ladies were wearing dark pants (which is now acceptable with mission president permission). One was very tall, an older lady in her 50s. She must have been 6 foot five.

I honestly thought they were community activists. They looked out of place. The ubiquitous name tag alerted me to their purpose.

That's what I do when I'm walking on a sidewalk. If a group is not interested in sharing the sidewalk, I come to a dead stop. They can figure it out.

As I read the post, this thought occurred to me.

My daily routine and all the issues that come with it gives me little time to really care about some things I observe. My wife was visited by the RS the other day for the first time in years. As I walked by the front room and gave a courtesy hello, they all looked at me as if I was the devil himself and said nothing. But I had things to do and a life to live, so I just plain did not care and moved on from that 15 second event.

Save for perhaps Utah and its worship of missionaries. People are too busy to really care about much of anything except for trying to maintain a job, family, and pay the bills. As I thought about missionary work in general, it came to mind that for all intents and purposes.....who really cares.

To bad that all those missionaries spending all that time and money do not realize that people really don't care. It is unfortunate that I did not come to a full realization of this truth before I wasted two years of my youth. At least I learned enough over the years to care not to ever do that again.

Several times over the last few years I've come close to hitting missionaries that had no clue how to ride a bike.

They'd cross streets against the light without stopping.

Veer into traffic.

Make U turns on busy roads.

Etc etc etc

Check for blue hair. That's a sure indicator.

I had a full time classroom volunteer for two years. She was retired from the job she had held her entire lifetime. She made copies for the entire building, graded and filed papers, threw classroom parties, and generally did whatever needed doing. And she liked to dye her hair burgundy.

If that's what you call a "community activist," then every school could use one.
