When I was a child my understanding that to fully live the L of C, one would give everything to the Church and it would give you what you needed. Now, they have watered down the concept so much, the rich man in Jesus' day would have qualified as living the L of C. For a rich person like Mitt Romney, paying tithing is such a trivial thing when you have a $100M in investment accounts. Now, the Romnmeys can take comfort they are living the L of C while having everything in the world that they desire. Conversely, the poor of the Church pay more than they should pay and have nothing to show for it.

"Today, we live this law in different ways. For instance, we serve others, accept callings and assignments in the Church and do our best at them, and pay a full tithe and a generous fast offering. When we do what the prophets and the Holy Ghost direct us to do to build up God’s kingdom and help the needy, we are living the law of consecration."

"When we do what the prophets and the Holy Ghost direct us to do to build up God’s kingdom and help the needy, we are living the law of consecration."

Words shift like sand.

I see a couple of problems right off the bat. What makes the Brighamite church God's Kingdom? Are they saying the Holy Ghost is the authority on that?

It makes sense for members to help the needy, as it takes the burden off the church. Although sometimes the needy are needy because they are super toxic. But the mishies brought them in, so yay for the numbers.

But mostly I think it's a political statement. The church is an ultra conservative echo chamber. The L of C is too much like socialism.

I thought the law of consecration is that you would give everything to the church if asked.

It hasn’t asked since the United Order got put on the back burner in the mainstream church. The [LDS] fundies are still fond of the concept.

You thought correctly. Don't they still have that in the temple, that you're supposed to give *everything* to the church if directed? That's the law of consecration; they just don't connect those dots.

The thing is, you can't consecrate anything you don't own outright. So if your home still has a mortgage balance, it's ineligible for consecration.

Problem is, it can't work in the real world. Orderville fell apart.
